At Friday’s CFFC 123, Max Quinones returns to action — a trip to Pennsylvania that was delayed due to Hurricane Idalia.
Luckily, Idalia missed Quinones’ part of Florida, but with flights cancelled and delayed, it turned out to be a condensed fight week for the flyweight.
The fight is intact, however, with Quinones (4-0) looking for his fifth straight win and fourth straight finish under the Cage Fury FC banner. “The Candyman” also got noticed for calling his shot in his last fight, predicting the outcome. There’s a reason for that, he told Cageside Press recently.
“As far as calling my shot, I’m not no ‘Mystic Mac’ or anything like that. I just see the tendencies that go on with my opponents because I study them extensively, and I just know what’s going to land and what’s going to hit,” Quinones explained. “For this upcoming one, I just see me touching him up repeatedly to where it will end up in a finish. But he is a little scrappy, I’ll give him that. He has heart, so I mean at the end of the day, he hasn’t felt my power, my long range, nothing like that. It’s going to be a good fight.”
Friday night, the first of back-to-back Cage Fury shows, represents a new opportunity for Quinones, who will be fighting in front of Pennsylvania fans for the first time. His previous fights for the company all came in Florida, where local crowds almost certainly had his back. Quinones, however, doesn’t necessarily hear what’s going on outside the cage.
“When I’m locked in, I really tune out the crowd. I just want to put on for the fans, put on a great show regardless, and hopefully gain some new ones with that.” Quinones sees what he does as “gladiator type sh*t,” and with that in mind, “I just want to exploit violence, put it onto my opponent, and then hopefully people just react in a positive manner to it and then want to keep following the journey along the way.”
As for his prediction — he’s been accurate before, after all — “second round,” Quinones told us. “For some reason, I’ve been visualizing second round. But regardless of whether the finish comes in the first or the third, “I’m ready for all aspects. But the thoughts and dreams I’ve been having, it’s second round.”
