Charlotte, NC — Brazilian bantamweight Douglas Silva de Andrade believed he had done enough to get the win against Cody Stamann at UFC Charlotte when the fight went to the scorecards.
“I was pretty confident. I felt that I had done everything I needed to do,” Silva de Andrade (29-5, 1NC) told media outlets including Cageside Press following the fight, which took place Saturday at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. “I think with time, I think with experience, we start understanding what the judges are looking for. I understand it’s a tough fight, and after that, I was pretty confident when they announced it.”
While he was confident after the fight, Silva de Andrade admitted that ahead of the bout, the pressure was on. The 37-year old entered the fight off a loss to Said Nurmagomedov, with a 2-2 record over four fights prior to the Charlotte card.
“Yeah. Pressure especially because it was a tough fight, tough opponent. And because of the recent record,” said Silva de Andrade. “Also, gotta talk about the weight cut for me too.”
On that front, Douglas explained that “We wanted to have a good camp, good weight cut, be ready for this fight, have good energy for it.”
But the situation that arose saw Stamann contact Silva de Andrade’s team, saying that he wasn’t going to make weight. That led to an agreed upon catchweight of 140 pounds. “At that point, it was just kind of frustrating for us, but I think he wanted to stay heavy, five pounds over, just so he can absorb all the blows from us. We know we have that power. But at the end of the day, that brought about one of those big, good fights. We went at it.”
Even though Stamann forced the move up in weight, it’s “good to be winning, very good to have a performance like that,” the Brazilian added. “That’s what the crowd likes.”
Douglas Silva de Andrade had nothing bad to say about his opponent, despite the change in weight. Instead, he was just grateful for the opportunity “to put on a show for everyone out here. That’s what people like to see.”
