UFC 279: Yohan Lainesse Wants Kicks To The Knee Banned

Las Vegas, NV – UFC welterweight Yohan Lainesse earned his first real UFC win when he took a split-decision victory over Darian Weeks at UFC 279 on Saturday night.

“I’m very happy man. The first goal of this fight was to prove to myself that I am able to do three rounds of five minutes and we did it. We did a really good place and we followed the game plan,” Lainesse told Cageside Press among other media at his post-fight scrum.

“Of course it wasn’t perfect, but for me it’s a good victory.”

Lainesse (9-1) had a reputation of gassing out during fight so he made it a point to work on his cardio during camp.

“Man….I was in the best shape of my life and I proved that to myself tonight. I worked very hard with my team on my cardio and I just have to trust the process like my coach said. So that’s what I did tonight. We trust the process and we did it,” he said.

Weeks used a kick to the knee to try and slow Lainesse’s ability to move forward. The kick did seem to actually hurt Lainesse and he was not happy that his opponent used it.

“I don’t know why this kind of a kick exists, seriously. I think it’s very dangerous. It didn’t hurt me with that, but I think it’s very dangerous that kind of kick,” said Lainesse.

Asked if the kick should be banned he replied, “Yes, of course.”

With two fights in 2022 Lainesse is looking to get back into the octagon sooner than later.

“I want to be back in the octagon (as) soon as possible. I’m not hurt. I didn’t get hit hard on my head. I’m in the best shape of my life. I’ve got the best team around me,” he said.

“I want to get back soon as possible. I want to go find my second victory and follow my road to the UFC.”
