Bellator MMA made its debut in Tacoma, Washington on Friday night, with Bellator 283 pitting two of the promotion’s top welterweights against once another.
Former three-time welterweight champion Douglas Lima has long been one of the promotion’s biggest homegrown stars. But with his last three losses all ending in defeat, not to mention the loss of his title, Lima needed to right the ship in order to make his way back to title contention.
Jason Jackson, meanwhile, had won five straight — and was looking for a signature win that could potentially land him a title fight, either against interim champ Logan Storley, or the winner of Storley vs. Yaroslav Amosov, dependent on the latter being ready to return to competition after serving in defense of Ukraine.
In a late twist, Lima missed weight by 1.8lbs on Thursday, with the fight moving forward at a catchweight.
The co-main event of Bellator 283, meanwhile, was something of a tragic story. Sidney Outlaw had originally been one of the names atop the card, in a title fight with lightweight champ Patricky Pitbull. When Pitbull withdrew due to injury, not only Outlaw’s title shot evaporated; so too did his main event billing. In place of Pitbull is Tofiq Musayev, a former RIZIN champ and a very dangerous fighter in his own right.
