Bellator 273: Lucas Brennan Says It’s Satisfying to See Gym Technique Work in Live Fights

Phoenix, AZ — Featherweight Lucas Brennan improved his spotless record to 6-0 at Bellator 273, doing so with another dazzling submission.

This time out, it was (as Brennan clarified after the fight) an assassin choke, which forced the tap from Ben Lugo. The fight was full of interesting transitions and positions, which was a welcome change for Brennan.

“Those positions are something I haven’t gotten into in any fights previous to this, but I’m in that position almost every single day at the gym. I know my training partners can attest to that,” Brennan told media outlets including Cageside Press following the fight. In terms of seeing his work in the gym translate into a win in a live fight, “it’s super, somewhat like, satisfying I guess to know it works on people outside my training group and things like that.”

“He countered a lot of my movements very awkwardly. We got in very odd, scrambly wrestling positions,” Brennan continued, “and so it was fun to be able to explore that a little more outside my wrestling room.”

Brennan has been waiting for a while to have someone engage in a grappling battle with him, having seen even more experienced jiu-jitsu guys avoid it. “It was an interesting, different look.”

After another impressive performance, Brennan hopes to return to action in late Spring/early Summer. “I give myself about a month,” Brennan said, in terms of a break. He’ll take a bit of time off his diet before he gets back into fighting shape. “Very end of probably May, early June, something like in that kind of time range. This whole next month I’ll be just kind of chilling, relaxing, I’m coaching my wrestling club through the rest of their season, and then I’ll be back into training camp.”
