Patricky Pitbull gets a second crack at Peter Queally this Friday at Bellator 270, after losing due to a doctor’s stoppage in the pair’s first meeting earlier this year.
He also gets a shot at the title. Ahead of the rematch, brother Patricio Pitbull vacated the lightweight title — without ever having defended it. Just like that, a two-year logjam was cleared. And surprisingly, Patricky was in the dark about the decision until it happened.
“I’m so happy for this opportunity that my brother gave me to fight for the title. So I want to enjoy the moment, I want to enjoy the fight,” Pitbull (32-5) told Cageside Press during Wednesday’s Bellator 270 media day. “I want to enjoy this great opportunity.”
When it came to his brother’s decision, Pitbull added, “it was a surprise. He gave me this surprise. I [didn’t] know about his decision.”
The chance to run it back with Ireland’s Queally in Dublin, Pitbull said, was “great, because I want to fight in his house, in front of his family, in front of his friends, in front of his team. And I’m so happy for this opportunity to beat him in front of his whole friends, family, and guys from his gym. I love this.”
The lesson learned from the first fight? That one’s simple. “Keep my head up when I take him down,” Pitbull responded.
Pitbull was unable to continue in the pair’s first meeting, care of a nasty gash opened up near his hairline. The controversy surrounding the stoppage, and Patricio opting to vacate the belt with his brother in mind, ensured a shot at gold. But regardless of circumstance, Patricky Pitbull believes if he wins, he’s the best lightweight on the planet.
“The name of the show? What the— it’s a sh*t idea, that men think about this,” Pitbull said, dismissing the idea that only the UFC champion is the true best in the world. “I saw many times, [fighters] from another big show, another event, trained with guys form Bellator, and the Bellator guys beat [them] three, four, five times in training.”
Pitbull wouldn’t go on record to reveal any names, but added, “it’s crazy. Nobody knows.”
