Nate Maness may have been out at the end of the first round, but by the end of the fight it was Tony Gravely who found himself on the losing end of a TKO finish at UFC Vegas 37 main card on Saturday.
Both Gravely and Maness had put together back-to-back wins inside the octagon, putting the prospect of three straight well within reach. Maness entered as a slight underdog but had a notable height and reach advantage over his opponent.
Both fighters took the center of the octagon after a glove touch. Body kick from Gravely started the fight. Gravey landed a knee, and Maness countered with a heavy right. Gravely shot in for a takedown, and Maness defended perfectly. Gravley landed a straight right. Maness went for an uppercut but missed; he landed a left hand immediately after that landed. Gravely shot for a takedown, and Maness defended. Maness landed his own takedown but Gravely popped right up. Gravely put Maness against the fence with two minutes left in the round. Both fighters exchanged body shots against the fence, and they disengaged. Gravley put Maness back against the fence with less than 90 seconds left. 20 seconds left, and Maness landed a punch while Gravely landed a body kick. With seconds left in the round, Gravely landed a right hook that sat Maness down. The bell saved him.
The second round started with Maness looking kind of stiff. Maness landed a punch, and then Gravely rushed Maness and put him against the fence. Gravely landed an elbow as they exited the clinch. Gravely shot for a takedown, but Maness defended. Maness landed a body shot and then a right hook that dropped Gravely. Maness pounced on him, and the fight was waved off.
What a comeback win for Maness.
