Julian Marquez let his hands go in the second round of his fight against Sam Alvey at UFC Vegas 23, knocking down then submitting his opponent.

In order to keep the smile on his face, Sam Alvey was going to need a win at UFC Vegas 23. Going up against short-notice replacement and noted Miley Cyrus fan Julian Marquez, Alvey found himself winless in five straight fights, coming off a draw after going 0-4 previously. Being a popular figure in the UFC had given Alvey an extra life after the draw, which arguably could have been a win for him, but it was do-or-die against Marquez.

Marquez ran to the center of the octagon to start the fight. Both fighters exchanged low kicks and then exchanged looping hooks. Marquez threw a nice body punch. Alvey nearly connected on a hard hook two minutes into the fight. Alvey was loading up on every punch. Marquez connected on a right punch that really hurt Alvey and dropped him to his knees. Marquez landed every two more punches. Both men exchanged wild hooks with 30 seconds left. Marquez looked hurt with ten seconds left, and Alvey rushed him to end the round and hit him with a low kick.

Marquez took the center of the octagon to start round two. Alvey landed a hard right hook 45 seconds into the round. Marquez lands a right hand and hurts Alvey. Marquez lands a left hook, and it led Alvey to go for a takedown. Marquez lands nasty hammer fists and then grabs Alvey’s neck, and Alvey goes to sleep. What a wild fight!

Marquez is now on a two-fight win streak, and that might have been Alvey’s last fight in the UFC.

Julian Marquez def. Sam Alvey by Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) in Round 2 (2:07)
