A pair of former UFC flyweight title challengers will collide this July.
MMA Fighting was the first to report the news that No. 4 ranked flyweight Jennifer Maia will fight No. 8 ranked Jessica Eye at a yet-to-be-announced UFC event on July 10. Both fighters have since confirmed the news on social media.
Former Invicta FC flyweight champion Maia (18-7) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to champion Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 257 and is looking to get back to the title. Before her title loss, the Brazilian became the No. 1 contender by submitting Joanne Calderwood in the first round of their fight and stealing her title shot.
Eye (15-9-1) is on a two-fight skid since defeating Viviane Araújo at UFC 245 in 2019. In her only fight of 2020, she lost to Cynthia Calvillo via unanimous decision in her first main event. She also missed weight for the second consecutive time. “Evil” Eye tried to rebound from her loss at UFC 257 back in January on ‘Fight Island’ but did so unsuccessfully. She would lose another unanimous decision to Calderwood in a very entertaining slugfest.
Both women need a win to keep making their way up the women’s flyweight division.
No location, venue, or broadcast plan has been reported for the UFC’s July 10 event, although it is speculated to be UFC 264. No other fights have been announced as of yet.
