Last week’s UFC 253 had plenty of bright spots, including Israel Adesanya retaining his title, and Jan Blachowicz taking light heavyweight gold home to Poland. A week later it’s back to Fight Island where we see a big fight in the women’s bantamweight division. Holly Holm will be taking on the red hot Irena Aldana in the UFC Fight Island 4 main event. Also on the card is Germaine de Randamie taking on Julianna Peña, Carlos Condit, and a slew of debuts. Kyler Phillips (7-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) was supposed to fight Danaa Batgerel but is now fighting the debuting Cameron Else.

How Else fares in the UFC:

Else is an action fighter who will put everything on the line early, willing to be the nail in order to be the hammer. He’s more of a grappler but will plant his feet and throw leather. Else is extremely wild with his striking but he can crack for sure. The time he’s been spending on the ranch with Donald Cerrone I believe has made him a more patient and tactical fighter.

Still though, defense a lot of times is on the back burner with Else being easily hit. In fact he has been dropped and finished a few times. Else has decent wrestling and on the mat, he’ll scramble his ass off in search of the neck. Off his back, he’s not as effective and will be stationary in one position. Takedown defense as well isn’t so good. Else has ten wins and all wins have come by a finish in the first round. He’s been finished in the first and anytime the fight leaves the first he loses. The gas tank is by far his biggest issue, visibly slowing down as the fight draws on, and it empties quickly due to him not conserving his energy. Else is exciting to watch but I worry about his cardio and defense. Else really gives me a Niko Price vibe but not at the same level, at least not yet.

How he matches up with Phillips:

Like Else, Phillips is another fast starter. The thing which could very well be the deciding factor is Phillips has the durability to go all three rounds. He does slow slightly but the gas tank is far better than Else. The chance I see Else having is if he catches Phillips early but Phillips has never been finished in his career. While Else has the power, Phillips is a volume guy which is something I always favor. I’ve got Phillips here and I’m fairly confident.
