Three “Huh?” Moments in MMA Last Week: Signed and Cut in 24 Hours, Hateful Emails, and Goodbye Ray Borg?

Ray Borg retired. Then didn’t. Maybe?

Following a tough last few years, both in the Octagon and in his personal life, former UFC veteran Ray Borg, 27, announced his retirement on Instagram last week. Shortly afterward, he deleted the post. Huh.

“Been in this game for a solid 14 years, never did I think retirement would come at the age of 27,” Borg wrote. “But some decisions are harder than others and I have to make sure I am making the right one for my family. I appreciate all the love the MMA community has shown my family over the years but it may be time to move on to the next chapter of my life. Much love everyone!” – Ray Borg, via MMA Mania

Borg, who has missed weight in four of his last nine bouts, was pulled from his last two match-ups. Following a loss to Ricky Simon in May, Borg was slated for fights in June and August. He was eventually pulled from both. Then, earlier this month, he was cut from the UFC.

Borg’s run of luck throughout his UFC career has been awful. He seems like a great guy (and fantastic fighter) who hasn’t been able to catch a break. Maybe some time away from the stressors of the fight game will do him some good.

Retirements in MMA are more of a negotiation tactic nowadays, anyway. Nobody is going to be holding Borg’s feet to the fire about this deleted post if he ends up fighting again. Regardless of whether or not he’s retired, here’s hoping Borg can find some stability and figure out whatever he needs to figure out.

A fighter’s dream came true when he signed for the UFC last week, only for that dream to last less than 24 hours. That’s about the same length as Ray Borg’s retirement, which isn’t anything new in MMA. Trash talk isn’t anything new either, but doing so via email was allegedly all the rage back in the day. Huh.

Huh? for the road
