Highly-touted prospect Julia Avila picked up a quick knockout victory at UFC on ESPN 10, this time over the veteran Gina Mazany.
“The Raging Panda” — arguably one of the better nicknames in MMA — was back in the octagon on Saturday. Julia Avila was set to take on Gina Mazany, in a bantamweight bout early on the UFC on ESPN 10 card.
Avila had won her promotional debut last July, and was looking to follow that up with a strong second effort. She previously had experience in Invicta FC, and had been fighting in MMA since 2012. Mazany on the other hand, had briefly exited the UFC, picking up a win outside the promotion earlier this year after going 1-3 from 2017 to 2019. She returned Saturday in place of Karol Rosa, who was forced off the card due to travel restrictions.
Mazany opened up with a quick left hand to start. Avila ate Mazany’s left, then ate another. She then decided to bite down on her mouthpiece and just throw. It started with a knee and elbow in the clinch, and Avila landed a huge flurry that caused Mazany to turn her back and start eating massive shots from Avila. A few more shots from Avila and that was it. For the third straight fight, it was a sub-60 second knockout, this time by Julia Avila.
As dominant a win as one can have for Julia Avila, and with that she moves to 2-0 in the UFC, and 8-1 overall. Given the bantamweight division, it’s highly likely she will be ranked next week when the rankings are updated. As for Mazany, this is her third loss in her last four fights.
Official Result: Julia Avila def. Gina Mazany by TKO, Round 1, 0:22
