Gilbert Burns came out firing out of the gate in the UFC Vegas main event. The Brazilian dropped former champ Tyron Woodley early, and swarmed, opening up a cut on the “Chosen One” and threatening with submissions.

Woodley survived what could have been a fight-ending sequence. Albeit he was left sporting a nasty gash, with no telling how that might influence the fight later on. After over a year away from the cage, coming off the loss of his 170lb title to Kamaru Usman, it was a rude welcome back.

Still, Woodley fought on. He acquitted himself better in the second, only to be put on his back by an explosive takedown by “Durinho.” He was rocked, several more times, as the fight progressed. And after saying pre-fight that he wanted to drag Gilbert Burns into deep water, Woodley found himself in a case of “be careful what you wish for.”

By the fifth, as the seconds ticked away, it was clear Woodley needed a Hail Mary finish. Burns hadn’t tired, Woodley had absorbed too much damage, and the finish wasn’t there. After five rounds, Gilbert Burns had the biggest win of his career.
