Eduard Folayang has a new opponent for ONE Championship: Fire & Fury later this month in the Philippines.
Former ONE lightweight champion Eduard Folayang has a new opponent for Fire & Fury at the end of the month. Originally scheduled to face Ahmed Mujtaba in the card’s co-main event, Folayang will instead face Pieter Buist, who steps up on short notice.
ONE Championship officials announced the news Thursday. No reason was given for the change in opponents.
The Netherlands’ Buist (16-4) will enter the bout against the ex-champ on the back of a seven-fight win streak. Two of those wins have come inside the ONE Championship cage, with Buist picking up wins over Kota Shimoishi and Tony Caruso in his last two outings. ‘The Archangel’ is a former tournament winner and lightweight champion in World Fighting League.
Folayang (22–8) has gone 1-1 since losing the promotion’s lightweight title to Shinya Aoki last March. His return fight after the title loss saw Eddie Alvarez submit him, but Folayang bounced back with a win over Amarsanaa Tsogookhuu in November.
ONE Championship: Fire & Fury takes place January 31, 2020 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines. The event is headlined by a strawweight title fight between Joshua Pacio and and Alex ‘Little Rock’ Silva.
