While the biggest MMA event of the month was set to unfold Saturday night, half a world away, ARES Fighting Championship hosted its first-ever card.

Dakar, Senegal was the site of the inaugural ARES Fighting Championship. Airing live Saturday on UFC Fight Pass, ARES 1 was topped by a light heavyweight clash between Laurynas Urbonavicius and Brazilian UFC vet Ildemar Alcantara, who made seven trips to the octagon between 2013 and 2015.

Alcantara entered the main event of ARES 1 on a four-fight win streak, while Urbonavicius came in on a six-fight streak of his own.

Also appearing on the card, Contender Series and Ultimate Fighter heavyweight Josh Parisian.

Note: ARES 1 concluded early due to weather conditions, with three bouts being scratched as a result. In a statement posted to their official Facebook page, the promotion wrote that “Our sincere apologies for cutting tonight’s event short. Unfortunately the intense humidity in Dakar this evening made for unsafe fighting conditions. Our priority is the safety of our fighters. We thank you for your understanding.”
