Her first UFC victory under her belt, Sabina Mazo is looking to move up in the flyweight division, and surprise everyone each and every time out.
Anaheim, CA — After stumbling out of the gate in her UFC debut, Sabina Mazo captured her first UFC win Saturday night at UFC 241. Mazo opened the show against Shana Dobson, and dominated the fight, taking home a one-sided unanimous decision victory.
Speaking to media outlets including Cageside Press following the fight, Mazo was glowing. “I’m very happy. I’m very happy because it was exactly the way I wanted to start in the UFC,” she told reporters assembled back stage. “I think it’s just the beginning. This is just a little part of me, a version I worked very hard on the past few months. I know that I have a great future coming up.”
As to what changed between her first fight and her second, Mazo said that “I think I believed a lot in my game in this fight.”
The loss in her debut, against Maryna Moroz at UFC Philidelphia, also had a silver lining. “I guess the last fight, of course I don’t want to lose, no one wants to lose, but it definitely helped me a lot to think about what I was doing, and tried to change a lot of aspects in my game.”
In comparison, “definitely I believed more in this [camp], trained very hard, different aspects of the fight. The ground, everything, striking,” she added.
Asked whether people had the wrong idea about her, from the head kick knockouts she won with early in her career, Sabina Mazo agreed. “Totally. I think every fight I want to surprise everyone. Not only the kicks, not only jiu-jitsu. It doesn’t mean I’m not going to finish a fight with a high kick, but I just want to reinvent and do my game better every time. And like I said before, just surprise everyone in each fight.”
Moving forward, “I just want to go back to the gym, work on a lot of things I saw in this fight, and whenever I can fight again, I will,” she said. She doesn’t have any particular name in mind either. “I just want to climb up to the belt, you know. Whoever it is on the list, I’ll go up. I’m not looking toward just one person.”
