Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend Rodolfo Vieira made good on his UFC debut, submitting Oskar Piechota in the second round at UFC Uruguay.
Highly decorated grappler Rodolfo Vieira made his promotional debut at UFC Uruguay. The Brazilian holds a variety of gold medals from various weight classes and jiu-jitsu tournaments from around the globe, and started competing in MMA in February of 2017. He amassed a 5-0 record, with four submissions, before signing with the UFC in June.
Oskar Piechota was hoping that facing another strong grappler wouldn’t have the same result as his most recent bout. In that bout, Piechota took the first loss of his career, as he was submitted by Gerald Meerschaert in July of 2018. Piechota is no slouch on the ground though, with five of his 11 career victories coming by submission. Piechota was also the former Cage Warriors Fighting Championship middleweight title-holder, winning the belt a few months before his UFC debut in October of 2017.
The fight got off to a slow start, with Piechota staying out of range while Vieira landed a few jabs. Ninety seconds in, Vieira shot for the first takedown of the fight, and Piechota impressively, and importantly, stuffed it. About a minute later Vieira shot for another takedown, and was able to get Piechota to the ground against the cage. Vieira held top position, while throwing in some ground and pound, for the final couple of minutes of the first round.
Piechota was back at work early in round two, stuffing a takedown in the first minute. But, less than thirty seconds later, Vieira was able to take Piechota down and get the fight to the mat once more. While Vieira attempted to transition from half guard to mount, Piechota was able to push Vieira off of him and get the fight to the feet. With a cut opened up underneath his right eye, Vieira quickly shot for another takedown, forcing Piechota against the cage halfway through round two.
Vieira then dragged Piechota to the ground, tying up his legs and working in some ground strikes from top position. Vieira worked himself into mount with 45-seconds left, and quickly applied an arm-triangle choke and slid into side control. Seconds later, Piechota was tapping to the jiu-jitsu legend, giving Vieira the victory in his UFC debut.
The Blackbelt Hunter adds another to his list.
