Paulie Malignaggi has signed with BKFC, and with a fight against Artem Lobov possible, things just lot very, very interesting.
Just when you thought Paulie Malignaggi would stick to commentary, the former boxing champ has decided to try his hand at bare knuckle. On Thursday, Bare Knuckle FC (BKFC) announced via press release that Malignaggi, a former IBF Super Lightweight and WBA Welterweight champion, had signed with the promotion.
Aside from his boxing career, Malignaggi is infamous as a former sparring partner of Conor McGregor, brought in for the Mayweather fight. The two would have a public falling out, and Malignaggi has remained in the headlines since, frequently commenting on MMA and boxing matters.
Coincidentally or not, Artem Lobov is currently fighting under the Bare Knuckle FC banner. A friend and training partner of McGregor, the possibility of the two facing off no doubt drove the decision to sign the boxer.
“BKFC is the new wave in combat sports. They’re doing great things and I’m very excited to be a part of this organization,” said Malignaggi in Thursday’s press release. “I’ve accomplished some big things in boxing career, and I look forward to what this next phase brings. After a long boxing career, it’s easy to miss the limelight and the rush that combat brings. I look forward to getting back in action and the new challenge of fighting for BKFC.”
The ex-boxing champ is expected to make his promotional debut on June 9. No opponent or location for the fight has been announced as of yet.
