Invicta FC will finally fill their vacant atomweight title as Jihn Yu Frey takes on Minna Grusander in July.

While Sarah Kaufman was the woman of the hour at Invicta FC 29 on Friday, the promotion announced another big scrap for its next outing. At Invicta FC 30 this July, standout atomweights Jinh Yu Frey and Minna Grusander will throw down for the vacant 105lb title. Invicta also confirmed that the event would see them back in their home base of Kansas City, MO.

Invicta FC’s atomweight title has been vacant since July of 2017, when Ayaka Hamasaki moved up to strawweight. Though the promotion seemed to hold out hopes of her eventually taking on Frey, one of the top atomweights in the world, Hamasaki instead signed with RIZIN FF, where she’ll compete this Sunday. Hamasaki and Frey had fought once previously, with Hamasaki earning the win via doctor’s stoppage. That didn’t sit well with Frey, who was ready to continue in the fight. However, Hamasaki went up in weight after that, losing to Livia Renata Souza then remaining out until signing with RIZIN.

Jinh Yu Frey (6-3) opted to look for atomweight gold elsewhere in the interim. However, a title challenge against former UFC fighter Seo Hee Ham in Korea’s ROAD FC late last year didn’t go as planned, as Ham got the TKO finish over Frey. Now, however, the 32-year old Jinh Yu Frey finally gets a crack at Invicta gold.

On the other side of the cage at Invicta FC 30 will be Finland’s Minna Grusander (6-1). ‘Brutsku’ is currently on a four fight win streak, and won her Invicta FC debut in March. Five of her six wins have come via stoppage.

Invicta FC 30 takes place at the Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City, MO on July 21, 2018.
