Headlined by middleweights Donald Sanchez and Noah Cutter, the “prospects” concept belied the fact that there were still a handful of recognizable names attached to the event.
Also on Saturday’s card, the debut of former UFC heavyweight Juan “The Kraken” Adams.

Canadian welterweight Rory MacDonald has a new opponent for his PFL 2022 semifinal fight this weekend at PFL 8.

MacDonald (23-9-1), a former Bellator MMA champion and UFC title challenger, had been expected to face Magomed Umalatov (12-0) atop this Saturday’s card in Cardiff, Wales. However, with Umalatov unable to secure a visa for the U.K., the Russian fighter has been replaced by Dilano Taylor (9-2).

PFL officials announced the news via press release on Thursday.

Taylor, who joined the PFL by way of the Challenger Series earlier this year, went 1-1 during the league’s regular season. He started off with a split decision win against Joao Zeferino, then fell to Magomed Magomedkerimov in his second fight.

That’s not the only switch-up to this Saturday’s event. Also unable to secure a visa was heavyweight Denis Goltsov. He’s now out of his semifinal fight opposite Matheus Scheffel, and has been replaced by former UFC fighter Juan “The Kraken” Adams.

Adams was a late addition to the PFL 2022 season, coming in as a tournament replacement and immediately making his presence felt. He stopped Sam Kei by TKO in the second round of their July contest to earn five points, landing just shy of the post-season.

With the latest changes to the PFL 8 card, it now breaks down as follows:

ESPN+ Postlims

Will Fleury vs. Anthony Salamone
Vojto Barborik vs. Radu Maxim
Moktar Benkaci vs. Francesco Nuzzi

ESPN Card

Rory MacDonald vs. Dilano Taylor
Ante Delija vs. Renan Ferreira
Matheus Scheffel vs. Juan Adams
Sadibou Sy vs. Carlos Leal
Nathan Kelly vs. Ben Ellis

ESPN+ Prelims

Joshua O’Connor vs. Emran Sakhizada
Mick Stanton vs. Marcin Wojcik
Chris Mixan vs. Christian Stigenberg
Hatef Moeil vs. Szymon Bajor
Lee Chadwick vs. Przemyslaw Mysiala

The second half of the Professional Fighters League’s 2022 season continued on Friday, with PFL 5 emanating from the Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

The “Hotlanta” card featured heavyweights and featherweights, plus a single lightweight fight — albeit one that would turn heads. That was the co-main event, which saw 155 pound leader Anthony Pettis, with a playoff spot already clinched, throw down with fellow UFC veteran Stevie Ray.

It was heavyweights in the main event, meanwhile. Last year’s champion, Bruno Cappelozza, continued his march towards a second title, paired up with Matheus Scheffel.

This year’s PFL 5 card might be more notable for what it had lost (and gained), however, then what it started out with. A full five fighters had been replaced just prior to the night of the event, with a couple of ex-UFC heavyweights stepping in on short notice. Those were Juan Adams, a Contender Series winner, and Maurice Greene, who joined the promotion via TUF 28.

Also in on short notice on Friday were Ago Huskic, taking on fan favorite Brendan Loughnane, Shelton Graves, a heavy underdog against heavyweight Ante Delija, and Reinaldo Ekson, up against a tough wrestler in Bubba Jenkins.

The short-notice fighters would need big, quick finishes to have any hope of making the post season.

PFL 5 gets underway at 6PM ET on Friday, June 24, 2022, with the main card kicking off at 8PM on EPSN (TSN in Canada). Full results from the event can be found below.

PFL 5 2022: Cappelozza vs. Scheffel Results

Klidson Abreu def. Renan Ferreira by unanimous decision (30–27, 30–27, 30–27)
Chris Wade def. Kyle Bochniak by TKO, Round 1, 1:10
Ante Delija def. Shelton Graves by unanimous decision (29–27, 29–27, 29–27)
Bubba Jenkins def. Reinaldo Ekson by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Brendan Loughnane def. Ago Huskic by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

Friday’s PFL 5 in Atlanta has undergone a number of changes.

With UFC alum Boston Salmon out of his featherweight fight against Brendan Loughnane, Bosnian Ago Huskic (8-4) has stepped up to take his place. Additionally, three fighters have been lost on the heavyweight side, resulting in three new fighters stepping in.

The fighters lost are Ali Isaev (due to visa issues), Jamelle Jones, and Stuart Austin (the latter two due to injuries). Taking their place will be some familiar names: Juan Adams, Maurice Green, and Shelton Graves.

Adams and Greene both previously competed for the UFC. Adams had recently revealed that he had signed on as an alternate for the PFL. Now, he’s getting a chance to step up and fight.

With a 9-4 record, Jackson-Wink’s Adams will face another league newcomer, Sam Kei (8-5). Kei missed his first fight of the season due to visa issues of his own, and was originally slated to fight Denis Goltsov this Friday.

Instead, Goltsov, a 2021 heavyweight semifinalist, will face Greene (10-6), who UFC fans will remember from The Ultimate Fighter 28. “The Crochet Boss” went 4-4 with the UFC before being released, but recently bounced back with a submission win at CES 68 in May.

Shelton Graves (9-5), meanwhile, is tasked with facing Ante Delija, a finalist in the heavyweight division last season.

Renan Ferreira, Denis Goltsov, and Bruno Cappelozza all have six points in the heavyweight division, while Delija has five. For any of the newcomers to make the post-season, they’ll need a quick finish — and they’ll have to hope that at least some of the division leaders are upset on Friday.

The changes don’t stop there. 2022 Challenger Series winner Reinaldo Ekson (17-5) replaces the injured Saba Bolaghi against standout wrestler Bubba Jenkins. Jenkins made it to the featherweight semifinals in 2021.

Taking place at the Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta, GA on Friday, June 24, the full PFL 5 card currently breaks down as follows:

PFL 5: Cappelozza vs. Scheffel

Main card

Bruno Cappelozza vs. Matheus Scheffel

Anthony Pettis vs. Stevie Ray

Chris Wade vs. Kyle Bochniak

Renan Ferreira vs. Klidson Abreu

Preliminary card

Ante Delija vs. Shelton Graves

Denis Goltsov vs. Maurice Greene

Sam Kei vs. Juan Adams

Bubba Jenkins vs. Reinaldo Ekson

Lance Palmer vs. Sheymon Moraes

I will be an alternate meaning that if anyone can’t fight for whatever reason I get my shot,” Adams wrote on Facebook. “I weigh in June 23 either way in Atlanta. My sponsors are set and I just want to thank all of them, as well as my fans for staying by me through the difficult process of finding a willing opponent, especially FURY Fighting Championship for allowing me this opportunity.”

“It’s no secret that plans don’t always unfold our way, but trusting in the timing of higher powers outside of my understanding has made way for numerous opportunities,” Adams added. “There’s six months left in this year and I plan to make the most of them.”

Adams won his way into the UFC in 2018 by way of Dana White’s Contender Series, after starting his pro carer going 3-0 for Legacy Fighting Alliance. After winning his first fight inside the octagon, he went on a three-fight slump that saw him lose fights to Arjan Bhullar, Greg Hardy, and Justin Tafa. That brought about his exit from the company.

From there, Adams moved to Fury FC, winning his next three fights, and capturing the Fury FC heavyweight title in the process. Though he’d lose the belt in his next fight, Adams bounced back in February, defeating EliteXC and UFC vet Aaron Rosa via TKO.

While Adams won’t necessarily fight on June 23, or at all, for the PFL, were he to step into the tournament, he’d have a shot at a million dollars in prize money. That’s the sort of opportunity that’s awfully hard to say no to.

Former UFC heavyweight Juan Adams wants to make his way back to the promotion to right some wrongs — and he views his first run in the company as a failure.

“The Kraken” picked up a heavyweight title win at Fury FC 49 on August 28 against Richard Odoms. He dominated Odoms for three rounds and ended up winning via doctor stoppage.

Adams (8-3) was proud of his performance.

“I thought it was really good, very dominant. [Odoms] was a guy that had fought all over the world. He fought Jeff Hughes, who is in the UFC, and he beat him 50-45. I made the fight look significantly less competitive, I finished the guy, and I took way less damage. So, I’m very happy with that performance, and I thought the ref let it go on much longer than it needed to,” Adams told Cageside Press in an exclusive interview.

The win over Odoms was Adams’ third win in a span of three months. He finished Jeremy Hardy in May and then Eric Lunsford in July, both in the first round.

Adams was released from the UFC in 2020 after going 1-3 in the promotion. The release hit the 29-year old heavyweight hard, mostly because he sees his time in the promotion as a failure.

“It’s one of the only things in life that I’ve done that I still view as a failure for me. Going 1-3 really damaged my ego a lot, and as much as I try and live outside of my ego, it still burns me. Every time someone says, ‘oh, you fought in the UFC, or hey, I remember you from your time in the UFC, like, that feeling or the connotation of failure accompanies it,” Adams said. “If I were to go back, it would be about evening out my record. The way I see it, I need to go back and win at least two fights in the UFC. That’s what I need to do.”

If Adams keeps winning, a trip back to the UFC could be in the future, especially because the UFC always needs heavyweights.

For the immediate future, another fight is coming his way. He has said that he has signed a contract to defined his newly won title, now he is just waiting for someone to accept, which he says is a headache because so many people turn down fights.

You can watch the rest of the interview with Juan Adams above, where he speaks about finding the love to fight again, his 2020, depression, and what he wants next.

Following his third straight loss in the UFC’s heavyweight division, ‘The Kraken’ has been released by the promotion. Juan Adams (5-3) announced the news on social media — but he’s not about to give up on his fighting career.

“Spoke with the manager and I’m not in the UFC anymore,” Adams wrote on Twitter. “As easy as it would be to give up, I’m going to keep going. I made the changes too late and now I have to pay for that but I have the right pieces in place now. I will continue Hoping and working for the best moving forward.”

The changes Adams is referring to are likely related to his move to Jackson-Wink MMA in New Mexico. Adams made the move late last year, a big change ahead of his fight with Justin Tafa at UFC 247 this month. Adams, a Houston native, spoke to Cageside Press about the move in December, noting that he’d been looking to find what he loved about the sport again.

Adams entered the UFC as an undefeated prospect with a record of 4-0 following a successful appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2018. He’d win his octagon debut against Chris de la Rocha before dropping three consecutive fights, losing to Arjan Bhullar, Greg Hardy, and Tafa.

A true heavyweight coming in right around the 265lb mark, and just 28-years-old, Adams potentially has a long career ahead of him. A stint back on the regional scene, or with the likes of Bellator (who have found a lot of success working with prospects) would seem ideal.

Adams joins the likes of TUF 27 winner Brad Katona and a number of others on the latest list of cuts.

Juan Adams made a big move last year, shifting his training to the famed Jackson-Wink MMA in New Mexico. Now, the Houston native was looking to put his hard work with a new camp to the test at UFC 247. Adams was the local boy and hometown favorite against Justin Tafa in a heavyweight scrap on the PPV card.

Tafa was in a similar spot that Adams found himself in before UFC 247. After three consecutive knockouts to start his career, Tafa fell short of expectations in his UFC debut when he was knocked out by Yorgan De Castro.

Adams started off the fight long, trying to use his range to keep Tafa on the outside of his punches. Adams threw a quick right hand and backed off as Tafa had his back to the fence. Tafa threw a quick punch that stiffened Adams up and dropped him, Adams ate a few more strikes on the way up. Adams wasn’t recovered when he stood up, and he ate a devasting right hook, right uppercut combination to end the fight, and put Adams out cold.

Justin Tafa is now 4-1 in his MMA career and showed the potential that many thought would be there in his first UFC appearance. He came up short there but made up for it in his sophomore appearance in the octagon. As for Juan Adams, after starting out his career 5-0 with lots of promise, he has now lost three in a row. His loss to Tafa is his second straight via stoppage.

Having made the move to Jackson-Wink MMA, UFC heavyweight Juan Adams plans to enter his next fight with a fresh slate, looking like a new fighter.

When ‘The Kraken’ was unleashed upon the UFC, he entered the promotion with a big head of steam. Following a successful Contender Series appearance, Juan Adams won his promotional debut, and the sky was the limit. Despite a promising start, however, Adams (5-2) has discovered that physical talents alone aren’t enough to get by on — and he’s looking to reinvent himself ahead of his return at UFC 247 against Justin Tafa.

Reinventing himself entailed a move to Jackson-Wink MMA in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Cageside Press caught up with the heavyweight this week, early on in a process that is already paying dividends.

“I made the move, it’s been tough adjusting. Physically as well as mentally,” Adams admitted. “We’re a little over a week in.”

On the physical side, there’s the elevation change, of course. “A lot of people don’t know this, but when you first move to a higher elevation, you really have to hydrate to speed up your body’s adjustment time,” Adams explained. That process had some unintended side effects. In short, it “made me a little bloated, I was a little chunky for a while,” revealed Adams. “I was worried about it. But it’s back under control now.”

In a relatively short span, Adams’ weight jumped up to 298lbs, then back down to 290. By the end of this week, he expects to be “sitting pretty at the 285 mark. That’s what we want to maintain most of my camp at.”

Making the move, of course, meant saying goodbye to his old team. Adams has nothing but high praise for his former coaches, saying “Honestly I was blessed. The coaches that I had down there [in Houston] really knew what they were doing.” There was one problem, however. “I just didn’t have access to the level of athletes that I needed to be working with.”

High-level heavyweights, of course, are not exactly in abundance. Couple that with the fact that Adams entered the UFC at 4-0. It was a big step up in a young career.

“It’s like going from high school to college. I was there at other gyms, and it got to a point where people just couldn’t compete with me,” he said. Which led to cutting corners. “I would take reps off, because I could get away with it there. It got to a point where I would try to exhaust myself, I was working out 5 to 6 hours a day, just so that when I would spar or I would go to technical classes, I’d be too exhausted to rely on my physical gifts.”

It’s a stark contrast to New Mexico, where Adams is training under the watchful eye of Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn.

“Out here, I’m going with guys that are good,” Adams said. That’s not the only difference, either. “The biggest difference here is, when you win, it opens you up. Sometimes guys are in awe of you, or they want to gun for you. It’s because they’re not on your level. They don’t share the same goal. Here, everyone at the gym is trying to be the best. They all want to go to that next level.”

Motivation, meanwhile, is all around him. On the very walls of Jackson-Wink itself. The gym has produced numerous champions, including, of course, Jon Jones and Holly Holm. Inside the facility, those big names adorn the walls.

“It’s one of those things, when you’re exhausted, you’re tired, you’re walking down that hall, it’s almost disrespectful not to put in work,” Adams said of his new surroundings. “Because all these champions have shared this champions’ ground. When you go down that hall, you’re always looking, and there’s always motivation. Because there’s somebody on that wall that’s reached a level that you haven’t.”

“That’s what I needed,” Adams added. “I look at that wall, I look in there, and it’s just like ‘okay, I want to be where that person has been.'”

A short while back, Adams posted a message on his official Twitter account that turned a few heads. In it, he wrote that since MMA had become his job, he “needed to really figure out the things that I love about the sport again.”

Last few months haven’t been the best for me, i took the time to really focus on mental health. When i started fighting it was an outlet and was fun. Now that it’s my job it shifted things and i needed to really figure out the things that i love about the sport again. #growth

— Juan Adams mma (@chosenjuan285) November 26, 2019

It’s a quote that just about everyone can likely relate to at some point in their lives. Adams elaborated on the comment for us this week, explaining that “when I said I need to find what I love about this sport again, a lot of people were thinking like ‘oh, well your losses, just because you lost, you don’t have it.’ And that’s not what it is.”

“The Contender Series fight was the last time when I truly felt like fighting was a release for me.”

Instead, it was more about his quick ascension in the sport. “The Contender Series fight was the last time when I truly felt like fighting was a release for me,” revealed Adams. “It got to a point where this was my job, and I wasn’t working out anymore because I wanted to. I was working out because I had to. And I had to really do some soul searching and new goal-setting.”

When Adams started out, he didn’t expect to make it to the UFC until 2020. Instead, “I got there in 2018.” His journey became fast tracked, and Adams soon found himself flying by the seat of his pants. It just wasn’t the same. “When I started fighting, when I was an amateur, I was working six jobs. Fighting was a release for me. It was an escape. I love that about it, I love that pure form of competition. Even when I got to LFA, a little bit bigger promotion, but it was still, I’m not making my living off that.”

“Then I get to the UFC, and winning a fight determines if you need a day job or if you don’t.”

His personal life brought added pressure. People wanted more of him. “Not necessarily financially, but just my time, my energy. I love people, I’m a people pleaser, but I get burned out. I was getting burned out, I was getting drained.”

It got bad enough, explained Adams, that walking out for a fight, he wasn’t even worried about that fight. Instead, he was “worried about all the stuff before the fight, and all the stuff after the fight. And that’s not going to let you go out there and be successful.”

Despite that, he’s not worried about fighting at home in Houston for UFC 247. “When I go home, it’s not going to be like that. Fighting at home, I don’t feel like it’s going to be that big of a distraction. Mainly because I haven’t been there this entire camp.”

That means less fanfare and obligations. Plus, “when I go back home now, I won’t be staying in my apartment, I’ll be staying at the fighter hotel. It’s going to be business. And then after the fight, yeah I’ll go out there, I’ll probably spend two weeks there at home. And then I’ll come right back here.”

In other words, Adams is treating his Houston homecoming like any other fight on the road. “Exactly. That’s how I have to treat it.”

As for opponent Justin Tafa, “I know he’s talented,” said Adams. “Obviously if he wasn’t, he wouldn’t be in the UFC, he wouldn’t have drawn the comparison that he has. But I do have some advantages. For one, I’m a lot bigger than he is, I’ve got the reach advantage and all that. So there’s that aspect of it. We’re just going from there.”

The comparison in question, of course, is Tafa’s link to Mark Hunt. Just 3-1 as a pro, Tafa has been billed as Hunt’s protege. Whether or not he lives up to those expectations remains to be seen. Recognizing his opponent’s strengths, Adams summed up Tafa by saying that “at the end of the day, he’s going in there to take food off my plate, he’s going in there to take my spot. That’s how we view him, as an opponent. We see every opponent as dangerous.”

Part of his rebirth, or rebuilding process, at Jackson-Wink, will be a more meticulous approach to preparation. “This is the first time that I’ll be watching film and doing all this, and really taking a planned approach to this.”

Adams does see some similarities between himself and Tafa. They both came into the UFC young, with a big head of steam. But those become less important with the reality of the fight. “It’s a test for both for us. Same as career-wise. We’re both coming off of loses. This could determine my fate with the UFC, and same with him. So we both have to take this fight very seriously.”

Without a doubt. Combat sports is unlike any other pro sport when it comes to wins and losses, really. You’re not blowing up the team after a couple of losses in the NFL or NBA. The Yankees aren’t about the ditch their star reliever after a handful of bad outings. But it only takes two or three losses to severely derail if not end a career in MMA.

Adams understands that, but he’s also not dwelling on it. “It’s something I’ve got to push to the background right now. It’s really weird, because you do have to acknowledge that the losses were the motivation for this move [to Jackson-Wink]. It’s one of those things where, you can’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results.”

“From there, it’s so crazy with MMA,” he continued, “because people only remember your last fight really. And it’s one of those things where, everyone feels like they can fight, so everyone feels qualified to talk about it. That is a very strange dynamic that you have when approaching this. But those losses, they’re kind of in the back of my mind right now.”

What’s at the forefront is that UFC 247 offers a fresh slate for Juan ‘The Kraken’ Adams. “We’re taking the skills that I have, we want to sharpen them, we’re going to add things to them, and just go into this fight looking like a completely different fighter.” Working with coaches Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn, and teammates like Christian Edwards and a host of others, Adams feels extremely upbeat about the move to Albuquerque.

“I like it a lot out here. There’s always somewhere to walk out here. I’m a big walker, it helps me clear my head.” Just another added benefit from his fresh start.

And if all goes well in Houston at UFC 247, Juan Adams knows what he wants for the rest of the year. “I want to fight at least three times in 2020. That will be the goal. I’ve got a list of about five fights that we’d like to fight after this one.”

“We’re focused on this guy. We don’t have a callout in mind,” he said, in case there’s any worry that he’s overlooking Tafa. “But there’s a list of guys that we want to fight, that we think are good match-ups for me. If their schedules line up with my schedule, then let’s do it. But right now, the goal’s obviously get this win in February, and by the end of the year, I’d like to be 8-2.”

UFC 247 takes place February 8, 2020 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
