Cage Fury FC was in action on Friday with CFFC 140 hosting a lightweight title fight, and the return to action of former Bellator welterweight champ Yaroslav Amosov.

Amosov was fighting for the first time since parting ways with PFL-owned Bellator (which has now been completely folded into the Professional Fighters League, aside from the old Bellator champions still carrying belts in some cases). He was also coming off the first loss of his professional career after dropping his belt to Jason Jackson; a definitive victory on Friday might just catch the attention of the UFC, given the Ukrainian’s 27-1 record.

Amosov was getting a very familiar foe in UFC veteran Curtis Millender.

Perhaps it’s a sign of the times, with the UFC seemingly employing a revolving door of a roster thanks to a constant stream of recruits from Dana White’s Contender Series. But where many regional cards look to boost their profile off the name of a former UFC fighter or two, XMMA 4: Black Magic in New Orleans on Saturday had over 10 fighters in action who had previously competed on the biggest stage in MMA.

That made for some interesting match-ups, and the possibility of a number of redemption stories.

Topping the event was two-time UFC flyweight title challenger John Dodson, looking to snap a two-fight skid against fellow UFC alum Francisco Rivera in a bantamweight match-up. Rivera, who had last competed in the octagon in 2016, had returned to action last year, going 2-1 in 2021.

The co-feature saw Bellator, UFC, and PFL vet Curtis Millender in action against Jared “Nite Train” Gooden, fresh off a win at iKon FC 1 over Aaron Highbaugh.

Zak Ottow, meanwhile, was looking for his fourth straight win since parting ways with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, against Kyle Stewart — with the explicit goal of returning to the big show with a big finish.

Be sure to check out our exclusive interview with Zak Ottow ahead of this one.

XMMA 4: Black Magic goes down Saturday, April 2, 2022 at The Fillmore in New Orleans, Louisiana. The card airs live exclusively on Fight Network, with the broadcast getting underway at 7PM ET. Full results from the event can be found below.

XMMA 4: Black Magic Results

Main Card

John Dodson def. Francisco Rivera Jr. by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Kyle Bochniak def. Carlton Minus by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
Ange Loosa def. John Howard by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Curtis Millender makes his PFL debut this Thursday. He has had two stints in Bellator and fought in UFC, and now he fights in his third big promotion, the Professional Fighters League.

“Curtious” makes his debut against former Bellator welterweight champion and two-time UFC welterweight challenger Rory MacDonald in the PFL 2 main event. MacDonald was one of the biggest signings in the PFL off-season, and his name is becoming somewhat legendary in the sport of MMA.

Millender sees him as just another person he has to fight.

“You know, I look at everybody as uh, everybody is man,” Millender said during PFL media day earlier this week. “Everybody is a man that I fight, they got two arms, two legs, I just got to go out there and do what I’m confident in myself, in doing and it’s going to be just like I wanted to be. Go out there, be dominant and finish Rory.”

Although he sees MacDonald as just another fight, Millender has always wanted to fight him. With that in mind, Millender was asked what his reaction was when he was offered the fight.

“Dream fight, dream money, dream opportunity,” Millender said. “I’ve always wanted to fight Rory; I’ve always seen myself beating Rory for years. It was a surprise, of course, but I wasn’t shocked. I didn’t get nervous. This is what I wanted.”

Watch the full PFL 2 2021 media day interview with Curtin Millender above. The event takes place this Thursday, April 29, airing live on ESPN 2/ESPN+.

Rory MacDonald’s debut fight for the Professional Fighters League is official for Thursday night’s PFL 2.

MacDonald tops this year’s PFL 2 card opposite Curtis Millender, who like “The Red King” has put time in under both the UFC and Bellator MMA banners. Both fighters will be making their promotional debut on the card in Atlantic City, NJ. As will several other participants, including popular UFC fighter and pro wrestler Tom Lawlor.

And while MacDonald headlines the card, last year’s champ, Ray Cooper III, returns as well, set to take on French newcomer Jason Ponet. Light heavyweight champ Emiliano Sordi will meet UFC vet Chris Camozzi, and also at 205lbs, Bellator standout Jordan Young makes his PFL debut.

All fighters hit the scales on Wednesday, and the full line-up made weight for Thursday’s event. Results can be found below. The event takes place live on Thursday, April 29 in Atlantic City, NJ, airing on ESPN2 and ESPN+.

Note — Vinny Magalhaes was taken to hospital during his weight cut, per a report earlier today by MMA Fighting. He has been replaced against Jordan Young by Askar Mozharov, who successfully made weight.

Former Glory Kickboxing tournament champ Joe Schilling is about to get another tough test in the world of MMA. Schilling (4-6) has been paired up with former UFC welterweight Curtis Millender (18-6) at next month’s Bellator 249.

The OC Register was first to report news of the fight.

Joe Schilling’s MMA career hasn’t been without its hiccups, but the deadly striker known as “Stitch ‘Em Up” is 2-1 in his last three fights inside the Bellator cage. He’s coming off a knockout loss to Tony Johnson in his most recent outing, however, in October 2019.

A year later, he finds himself paired up with Millender, who went 3-2 in his UFC run against some tough competition. “Courteous” Curtis Millender’s release from that promotion came as something of a surprise, but the UFC’s loss was Bellator’s gain. In his return to the company (Millender originally competed for Bellator in 2015, then again in 2017), he’s 1-1. He’ll enter the fight with Schilling off a loss to Sabah Homasi back in August.

The Schilling fight will be Millender’s third of 2020.

Bellator 249 is expected to be headlined by women’s featherweight champ Cris Cyborg, making her first title defense opposite Arlene Blencowe. Patricky Pitbull is also set to appear, taking on LFA champ Jaleel Willis. The event takes place October 15 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Homasi defeated Curtis Millender at Bellator 243, felt it was his best performance yet.

Sabah Homasi was victorious at Bellator 243, his third win in a row. Fighting fellow former UFC vet in Curtis Millender, Homasi dominated in a technical bout. While during media day Homasi stated he wanted to ‘bring his head home on a spike’, he may have impressed even more with a three round genius game plan against the speedy Millender.

“I felt confident, I f*cking dominated every round,” Homasi said of the decision. “This is mixed martial arts, not kickboxing. If you are expecting someone to come in and stand and strike with you, you’re in the wrong f*cking sport,” Homasi continued. “If you don’t utilize all your tools then what the f*ck you fighting MMA for?”

Homasi had some intense fight IQ in his corner on Friday night at Bellator 243. His head coach, and head coach of American Top Team, Mike Brown. He also had good friend and training partner Dustin Poirier belting out what to watch for and what transitions were needed to steer clear of submission attempts.

“Super helpful, we put the reps in over and over again to the point where I was doing it in my sleep,” Homasi told media outlets including Cageside Press. “But that’s what you gotta do, do it over and over again until your doing it in your f*cking sleep.”

Sabah Homasi is of Lebanese background, and with the recent tragedy that occurred in the country, Homasi is going to donate to Poirier’s “Good Fight Foundation” to help in any way he can.

“This was for all the people in Lebanon,” Homasi stated. “My family is safe, I’m sorry for all the people whose loved ones are effected by it. Dustin Poirier has the Good Fight Foundation, so I’ll auction of my fight kit and take those donations to send over to Lebanon,” Homasi graciously stated. “It’s the best I can do right now, just to give back to the community.”

As for who is next for Homasi, who is now on a three fight win streak, it’s the man he has been scheduled to fight twice now, “Semtex.” Paul Daley. That’s Homasi’s pick.

“I want Paul Daley, bring that ninja turtle over here as soon as his border opens up,” Homasi told the media. “I want him, I want anyone in the top 10 to climb up this ladder.”

On his second run in Bellator MMA, with a stint in the UFC in between, Curtis Millender was looking to up his value at Bellator 243. About to hit free agency, he had a chance to put together a two-fight win streak. Of course, American Top Team’s Sabah Homasi would have something to say about that.

The pair threw down at a 175lb catchweight on Friday, a smart move given the pandemic. The fight opened the event’s main card.

With action underway, Homasi was taking some big swings, particularly with an overhand right. Millender worked in kicks, a spinning back fist, and relied on his length to keep Homasi on the outside. With a five inch reach advantage, it was a smart approach. Homasi’s kicks, to the body in particular, hit home however, and he soon closed the distance for a takedown with nearly two minutes remaining in the round. That game Homasi a fair amount of time to work from guard. Not enough, however, to come close to finishing the lanky Millender.

Round two saw Homasi continue to find success with kicks upstairs. He punched his way inside within the first minute, tying Millender up, looking for the takedown. With some effort, he’d land that, pulling his opponent’s legs out from under him along the fence. Homasi moved to half guard, looking for space to slip in an elbow or two. Millender would try to scramble, and briefly flash a triangle attempt, but that just resulted in Homasi taking his back briefly. A slip-up from Homasi however allowed Millender to get on top, with less than a minute in the frame. “Courteous” would be on his back again by the bell, however.

It certainly felt like Curtis Millender would need a finish in the third if he was to walk away with a win on Friday. He took the fight to Homasi early in the round, landing a kick, his jab, and bringing Homasi’s gas tank into question. However, a choke attempt saw Millender give up position, allowing Homasi to get on top. Millender would actually make his way back on top, ending the round on top dropping ground and pound. It wasn’t enough, however, as the scorecards gave it to Homasi.

Official Result: Sabah Homasi def. Curtis Millender by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

With free agency looming, Millender looking for top contender if returning to Bellator.

Curtis Millender is just like the rest of us, the rest of the world. When asked what has been the biggest struggle of the last six or so months that have been plagued by a pandemic, his answer was simple.

“I just miss everyone,” Millender laughed. “Man I just miss everybody.”

Millender left the UFC after losing two straight bouts. After a 3-0 start with the promotion, the back-to-back losses were apparently enough to let the 32-year-old fighter go. After a victory in his Bellator debut, Millender knows the importance of a winning streak.

“It’s very important. I’m not doing this as a hobby. This is truly my life, this is how I want to take care of my family,” Millender told Cageside Press at the Bellator 243 media day. “Building a streak is only going to put me in a position to make the money I need to make to take care of my family.”

When Bellator 243 goes down this Friday, Millender will be facing American Top Team’s Sabah Homasi. Millender believes that Homasi won’t have what it takes when it comes to his speed, quite frankly. “Courteous” believes his skill set is more dominant in nearly every facet of the fight between the two.

“Me being the longer, rangier, faster guy, [with] more skill-wise, he has to close that distance and try to get close to me,” Millender opined. “But you’ve got to cross that line, and unfortunately on the other side of that line is a lot of mean, evil stuff.”

This is the last fight on Millender’s contract with Bellator. While he believes he will be victorious at 243, he isn’t completely sure where he will be after this fight. He understands that his plan isn’t fully in his own hands.

“I have a plan but at the end of the day it’s not really my call. Whoever is going to give me what I need to take care of who I need to take care of, that’s where I’m going to go.” When asked if his plan involved Bellator, his response was simple. “Who knows.”

If he does return to Bellator MMA, however, the welterweight is looking for “top ten, top seven. I like the Ed Ruth match-up, Semtex [Paul Daley], of course MVP, but we all know how that happened the last twenty-five thousand times.”

Regardless of where his next fight will be, Millender is focused on Friday night. “Courteous” calls himself a fight nerd, one that is always watching film.

“You have to feed the mind. You can’t always go to the gym. I am a very smart fighter, make opponents fall into the traps and avoid damage.”

Curtis Millender is set to battle Sabah Homasi this Friday night on the main card of Bellator 243 at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Los Angeles, CA — Improving to 18-5 with a one-sided beatdown of Moses Murrietta at Bellator 238, former UFC welterweight Curtis Millender got back in the win column in a big way.

Millender picked up his first win in just over a year on Saturday in L.A., part of Bellator’s first even of 2020. His performance earned him a pair of 10-8 scores, not a bad showing at all, in what was something of a homecoming fight (Millender had competed for Bellator several times prior to his UFC stint).

“I felt like I preformed very well,” Millender said following the bout, speaking to media outlets including Cageside Press. “I went out and showed a lot of things I wanted to show. Wrestled a little bit, got a couple takedowns, dropped him a couple times.”

“Overall,” he added, “without getting the finish, getting two 10-8 rounds is just close.”

Millender looked like he was working to set up a big finish throughout the fight, though it didn’t come in the end. His coaches, he said, “they know how I am. I’m flashy with my talking, flashy with my fighting.” As for his opponent, Murrietta, “he’s a local guy, we know of each other, so he’s seen a lot of me. He defended the high kicks pretty well. He posted about a month ago about defending the flying knee; I didn’t even throw any. I knew he was waiting for that too, I kind of was reading him. I didn’t even fake any of them.”

Snapping a two-fight losing streak, Millender said, took a load off his back. “A big load. The last time I won was in this building. December of 2018. Just hearing that I won was awesome.”

Moving forward, Millender now gets to call his shot, or at least attempt to. And MVP — Michael ‘Venom’ Page — is at the top of the list. “I still want that. It’s up to him. It’s clearly up to him. Everybody knows I want the fight, both Bellator and him.”

At the end of the day, “I want exciting match-ups,” Millender stated. “I was saying during media day, [Jason] Jackson. I wouldn’t even mind Ed Ruth. I have to beat the kind of guys that have been my Achilles heel throughout my career. That’s the only way I’m going to get what I deserve.”

Bellator 238 kicks off the year for the Viacom-owned promotion, and in a big way. The debut of Cris Cyborg, a featherweight grand prix quarterfinal, and some compelling and fun fights pepper the card, which gives the UFC (setting up shop in Raleigh, North Carolina a few hours prior to Bellator’s show in L.A.) a run for their money.

The early action at Bellator 238 isn’t too shabby either. Uber-prospect Aaron Pico looks to get his career back on track against the dangerous Daniel Carey. Carey might not be a household name, but he does hold wins over Gaston Bolanos and Cris Lencioni.

Jiu-jitsu ace AJ Agazarm is back as well, taking on Adel Altamimi, whose story of being rescued by marines from the hands of al-Qaeda terrorists in Iraq went viral last year. Altamimi trains out of Jay Glazer’s Unbreakable gym in Hollywood, and there’s a chance actor Chris Pratt could be on hand to support his pal.

Jay-Jay Wilson is an undefeated young prospect worth keeping an eye on, while Curtis Millender makes his return to the Bellator cage after a stint in the UFC.
