]]> UFC 275 was one of those exciting Youth vs. Experience fights that comes around every once and awhile. Glover Teixeira vs. Jiri Prochazka was more than that, however, as it was a contrast of two styles that, in their own way, could finish the fight in an instant.

Glover Teixeira’s legacy could be further cemented as an ageless wonder and one of the best light heavyweights of all time with a defence of his light heavyweight title over his opponent, the younger assassin Jiri Prochazka, who has twenty-five knockouts on his resume. Glover Teixeira could potentially ride off as a champion after a UFC 275 win, and with retirement talks buzzing leading up to the fight, what a way to go out with a victory over one of the biggest beasts in the division.

The critics and naysayers were out in full force criticizing Jiri Prochazka on getting a shot at UFC gold with only two fights inside the octagon, but the violence he showcased in those two fights dismantling former title challengers Dominick Reyes and Volkan Oezdemir, made it a no brainer for the UFC to give Jiri a shot.

It’s hard to believe there will be anyone complaining after Saturday. The back-and-forth all out war to showed the world just how exciting the Light Heavyweight division still is, even in the absence of a certain former champ. Jiri Prochazka and Glover Teixeira put it all on the line giving a gritty, stellar performance. The cuts both endured at UFC 275 will forever be reminders and will tie both men’s careers together for a long, long time as this has potential to be Fight of the Year. The judges would not decide this fight as Jiri Prochazka got the greatest submission of his career over the submission tactician, Glover Teixeira, late in the fifth to become the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion.

]]> With the UFC Light Heavyweight title on the line at UFC 275 between number one contender Jiří Procházka and the current light heavyweight king, Glover Teixeira, the division is in search for new contenders ready to step up once the dust settles in Singapore on June 11. That made UFC Vegas 54 the perfect way to get the division going, with what looked to be an intense main event between Jan Blachowicz and Aleksandar Rakic.

Jan Blachowicz was looking to bounce back and get in title contention with a win over Aleksandar Rakic, who has long been on the radar as the next big thing in the Light Heavyweight division. With Jan back on track after a neck injury that originally postponed this fight (which was supposed to take place in March), a win over a rising star and contender like Aleksandar Rakic could put him on the path of redemption to capture the championship he lost to Glover Teixeira at UFC 267.

Aleksandar Rakic has taken out former title contenders and looked to make a statement with a win over a former champion at UFC Vegas 54. If he could secure a win over Jan Blachowicz, there would be no denying that he could be next against either Jiří Procházka or Glover Teixeira, depending on who has the title after UFC 275.

It was a great fight between Jan Blachowicz and Aleksandar Rakic as long as it last on Saturday. It looked to be tied at a round apiece, until early on in the third, Rakic stepped back to avoid damage from Jan and unfortunately went down with what looked like a knee injury, giving Jan the TKO victory. Most likely we will see these two running this back in a rematch, but in the meantime, it’s Blachowicz coming out with the W.

]]> Stylistically, Rob Font vs. Marlon Vera had potential to be something special the moment the fight was announced. Both men are tough opponents for any of the top Bantamweights in the UFC, so to pair Font and Vera was smart matchmaking by the company.

All fight week, excitement for this one was rising. Then, one day out from the fight, a little damper was put on things when Rob Font stepped on the scale, missing weight at 138.5 pounds. Suddenly, the narrative shifted. Font was not just looking to bounce back from a loss to Jose Aldo, but was looking for redemption. Still, even with the missed weight, the fight looked to entertain as both men were jockeying for position and looking to move closer to the top five — and from there, the title.

UFC Vegas 53 was a special moment for Marlon “Chito” Vera, as he become the first Ecuadorian fighter to headline a UFC event. His long road to this point had been built on hard work and his grit. Vera is a tough, violent fighter and he wanted to show that no one, not even Rob Font would get in his way of achieving dreams of continuing on the path to being a champion one day.

Rob Font is used to the five-round main events and his conditioning is top notch, as he has historically put on many close exciting fights in the UFC. For Vera, Saturday marked his first five-round affair. He proved up to the task.

Both men showed up for one of the most exciting main events of the year so far. Rob Font showed ample heart and at times connected with an unbelievable quantity of strikes. As the fight went on, however, his face began to show the damage as Chito Vera began to unleash hell in the later rounds. Vera managed to drop Font in three consecutive rounds; it was very surprising that the fight went the distance, but after five rounds it was in the hands of the judges. Marlon Vera got the unanimous decision victory, a well-earned one at that.

]]> Joanderson Brito, 0-1 in the UFC after winning on the Contender Series last August, was getting a serious step up in the form of Andre Fili at UFC Vegas 53.

The featherweight pairing featured on the Fight Night event’s main card, and saw Fili in action for the first time since an accidental eye poke against Daniel Pineda resulted in a No Contest last June.

In terms of the test in front of him, there was no question that Brito passed — with flying colors, frankly.

Joanderson Brito vs. Andre Fili opened up with a touch of the gloves to start the first round. It would be over less than a minute later. Brito and Fili both came out fast and furious off the opening bell, but it was the Brazilian Joanderson Brito that landed a jab and a devastating right hand, crumpling Andre Fili. He followed it up with some ground and pound to secure the victory early in the very first round, with the ref coming in to make the save as Fili was covering up.

After nearly a year out of action, it’s back to the drawing board for Andre “Touchy” Fili, who has been a mainstay of the featherweight division in recent years. For Joanderson Brito, meanwhile, he’s secured the biggest win of his young career in highlight reel fashion.

]]> It looks like the stacked UFC 275 fight card has lost a key middleweight bout.

The June PPV event, that glistens with the two title fights — Glover Teixeira vs. Jiří Procházka for the Light Heavyweight championship, and Valentina Shevchenko defending her flyweight title against Taila Santos — has lost a potential number one contender’s fight between Robert Whittaker and Marvin “The Italian Dream” Vettori.

Ex-champ Whittaker informed the social media world of the news on Wednesday, after Vettori dropped a hint earlier in the day. In a brief statement, he wrote that due to an undisclosed injury he sustained during his fight camp, he would have to bow out of UFC 275 in June.

The timing couldn’t be worse, with anticipation building for what was gearing up to be an exciting match against a tough opponent in Marvin Vettori.

Whittaker (23-6) was looking to bounce back and get back into the win column against Vettori, after coming up short in his rematch for the middleweight title against Israel Adesanya at UFC 271.

With Robert Whittaker out for the foreseeable future, it is uncertain if Marvin Vettori (18-5-1) will want to wait for The Reaper or search for another fight to continue his momentum of trying to get back into title contention. The Italian fighter last competed in October, winning a unanimous decision against an over-sized Paulo Costa, in a fight that was moved to light heavyweight when Costa entered fight week heavy.

]]> Sometimes a rematch comes along that simply makes sense, and is needed to figure out who could potentially be fighting for a shot at a world title. That is what we get with Vicente Luque vs. Belal Muhammad 2 at UFC Vegas 51.

Both men have climbed their way to the top of the welterweight division since their first meeting, and now a former foe stands in their way. To become world champion, both Vicente Luque and Belal Muhammad needed to run it back, and show who had developed more.

Both men have seemingly evolved on their quest to become UFC champion since their first fight in 2016. The rematch between Luque and Muhammad could very well be considered a number one contender’s fight, with the winner in striking distance of a title shot — at least were it not for names like Khamzat Chimaev and Leon Edwards being out there.

What the UFC Vegas 51 main event came down to was a back-and-forth fight between Vicente Luque and Belal Muhammad. It boiled down to the fifth round, with a lot of speculation on how the judges scored the fight through the first four rounds. Belal Muhammad got a takedown in every round and became a puzzle to figure out with his constant movement. When Vicente Luque landed his strikes, they seemed to always score with heavy damage. The fight was left in the hands of the judges however, who felt Belal Muhammad had done enough to get the unanimous decision victory.

]]> Dedicated UK fans who normally stay up super late for a UFC Fight Night or Pay Per View were treated to a fight card in their own backyard with the promotion’s return to London, England — capped by a heavyweight match-up between Alexander Volkov and Tom Aspinall.

With London not having a fight card since 2019, the UFC needed a big main event top the show. And frankly, little else is bigger than a heavyweight main event with two top contenders in the division.

Tom Aspinall continues to get the big names to stand against him in the octagon and a win over Alexander Volkov could be the fight to propel him to the top of the division — getting him closer to a title shot. That we’re even talking about title shots for Aspinall, given his relative youth in the weight class, says a lot.

Alexander Volkov has been so close to a title shot but has come up short in key match-ups. If Volkov could stop the rise of the young juggernaut Aspinall and steal his momentum, talk could continue with Volkov potentially being in the running for an interim title shot while Francis Ngannou heals up from surgery and sorts out his contract situation.

In the end, it was the British fighter’s night. It didn’t take long for Tom Aspinall to get the victory inside the O2 Arena. Once Aspinall got the fight to the ground with a double leg take down, he got to half guard and locked in a submission, putting the rest of the heavyweight division on notice as his stock surly rose as a top contender for the heavyweight title.

]]> Paddy Pimblett had been a lightning rod for controversy once again ahead of UFC London.

The Liverpool native, scheduled to face Rodrigo “Kazula” Vargas on the Fight Night show’s main card, wound up in a confrontation with Georgian Ilia Topuria earlier in the week. Topuria had taken issue with comments Pimblett had made online about his home country, but that was on the backburner while Pimblett focused on business with Vargas at the O2 Arena on Saturday.

Rodrigo Vargas looked to spoil the homecoming of Paddy Pimblett with the UFC’s return to London. Rodrigo Vargas could put his name on the UFC map with a win over a highly popular fighter like Pimblett.

Many have waited for the notorious walk out from the countryman Paddy Pimblett, and you could feel electricity generate throughout the arena. What a great feeling as you could feel the energy from the crowd, and right before the bell rang you felt that we were in for an entertaining bout.

Rodrigo Vargas got the fight to the ground early in the first, and up against the cage Vargas landed some ground strikes. Paddy made his way back to his feet, still pressured against the cage. A beautiful judo throw from Paddy with Vargas giving up his back, Paddy looked for a rear-naked choke and with some protests of Vargas having his gloves, Paddy got the choke and first round submission. Molly McCann joined Paddy Pimblett inside the Octagon to celebrate.

Thiago Santos was the absolute underdog coming into the main event, but the one thing you can’t count out when it comes to Santos is his power. With so much pressure being placed on Magomed Ankalaev, Thiago Santos had a chance to shock the world and spoil a lot of bets on Saturday.

With a win over Thiago Santos, Magomed Ankalaev could continue his rise up the ranks and keep his winning streak inside the Octagon rolling. With seven wins in a row, many were already giving Ankalaev serious discussion on where he ranks come title contention talk.

We knew it was going to take but mistake, and the fight would have been over in an instant. Apparently, Santos and Ankalaev knew it was well. So instead of a brawl, it was a chess match from the beginning of the fight — who knew that Thiago Santos vs. Magomed Ankalaev would go so deep into the main event rounds? Heading to the judges, it could have been either man’s fight. In the end, Magomed Ankalaev got the win via decision in a light heavyweight chess match — then called for a title shot.

Font vs. Vera is targeted for a five round main event on April 30, per an initial report from ESPN. The fan-friendly match-up has the UFC faithful salivating on social media, for what is expected to be an action-packed, entertaining bantamweight fight.

There is an interesting common denominator for both men ahead of the fight: the last defeat on both of their records came against Brazilian legend Jose Aldo. A bitter feeling that both Font and Vera no doubt want to put behind them in this five round fight.

Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera has had a couple of fights since his loss to Aldo, as he went back the drawing board and put together a string of wins, most recently KO’ing Frankie Edgar at UFC 268.
