Two of the strawweight division’s most determined grinders collided Saturday night at the UFC Apex as Piera Rodriguez faced Sam Hughes at UFC Vegas 114.
Rodriguez (11-2) came into the fight riding a two-fight win streak hoping to add to her momentum at 115 pounds. A victory over Hughes could net her a matchup against a ranked fighter in her next bout.
Hughes (11-6) came in on her own three-fight win streak knowing that another victory may send her into the rankings.
Round 1 – Rodriguez pressured Hughes early, throwing heavy shots while looking to secure a takedown. Hughes initially defended the attempt but committed an accidental eye poke while working her way off the cage.
When the action resumed, Rodriguez went right back on the attack, landing combinations while continuing to hunt for a takedown. Hughes defended the second attempt and briefly went for one of her own, but Rodriguez reversed the position against the fence before the two eventually separated.
Round 2 – Rodriguez continued to apply pressure, landing heavy shots as the two exchanged on the feet. For much of the striking exchanges, Rodriguez appeared to get the better of the action. Hughes mixed in leg kicks, though she struggled to effectively set them up.
Hughes later shot in for a single-leg takedown, but Rodriguez’s defense held firm. Rodriguez quickly turned the position into a Thai clinch, where she landed several knees to the body before the action moved away from the cage.
Round 3 – The round opened with more pressure from Rodriguez, while Hughes appeared to be in need of a finish. Hughes showed increased urgency, taking more chances to land strikes, but was countered several times in the process.
Rodriguez eventually secured a clinch and pressed Hughes against the fence, landing shots to both the body and head.
The remainder of the round followed a similar pattern, with Rodriguez’s relentless pressure proving too much for Hughes to overcome.
Official Result: Piera Rodriguez def. Sam Hughes via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
