Houston — Serbian welterweight Uros Medic knows he can knock people out, so his fast hands and violent stoppage of Geoff Neal at UFC Houston came as no surprise to “The Doctor.”
“It’s going to keep happening. I carry the power, I have the sight, I have the reflexes. I have everything I need to knock people out, and I just keep stacking them,” Medic (13-3) told media outlets including Cageside Press during the event’s post-fight press conference at the Toyota Center in Houston. “So this is one of those. I feel bad for him, it was hard to celebrate but at the same time I wanted to explode from all the adrenaline and happiness.”
Neal was pretty much flatlined, and Uros has been there himself, he noted. “It’s tough, I’ve been on the other end of it. Last year, January, I was laying cageside, barely conscious. It’s tough, but that’s the name of the game, and we’re all bred and made for this. I know he’s going to get back up and I know he’s going to do well. He’s been at the top for a hot minute, he’s had some amazing fights. I know he can bounce back from this. It is what it is, you just keep going.”
In a smart post-fight interview that saw him call for a main event in Belgrade against ex-champ Leon Edwards, Medic also revealed he was facing travel restrictions at the moment. The 32-year old has been living legally in the U.S. for roughly a decade, but is not a U.S. citizen.
“As an immigrant, it’s a little hard getting things done. I know how busy they are; almost everyone in the world wants to live in the United States,” he said backstage, expanding on the issues he’s been faced with. Medic revealed that his case seemed to have stalled; he has a work permit, but travel documents were more of a concern, especially since he didn’t feel safe traveling during COVID. Time lapsed, and he can no longer leave the country.
“It’s been hard, not being able to travel home.”
Good news might be on the horizon, however. Following his win, Medic wound up on a phone call with none other than U.S. President Donald Trump. “Little do you know, I get back, with Dana White [UFC President and CEO], I’m back in his office, and Dana’s got President Trump on speaker phone. And I’m just standing there, I could not believe what’s happening. I’m talking to the President, he said ‘you’re good to go where ever you please, you can travel, just give Dana the documentation, the information that you need.’ I’m just blown away.”
It all seems to be a little overwhelming for Uros Medic, who admits that it was another dream come true type of moment.
“I’m still processing all of it. Dana just made my dreams come true for the second time. Third time. First was to get signed, second was to go into the top 15, now I just got to speak with Mr. President on the phone, and he said I’m good to travel. My stuff is done. It’s going to take a minute for me to process this. A lot has happened in the past hour.”
