ONE Championship returned to Japan on Saturday for ONE 172 at the Saitama Super Arena, featuring a striking super-fight atop the card.
In a flyweight kickboxing showdown, Japan’s own Takeru Segawa was set to take on Thai star Rodtang Jitmuangnon, one of the biggest possible fights the promotion could put on. With Takeru a superstar in Japan and Rodtang massive in his native Thailand, it was a huge fight for South East Asia, and kickboxing as a whole.
It was preceded, mind you, by a quartet of title fights, and what should have been a fifth- though one of those had been thrown for a loop at the ONE 172 weigh-ins. After missing weight and hydration, Superlek Kiatmoo9 had been stripped of the ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai championship. As a result, his rematch against Nabil Anane had been switched to a three-round, non-title affair.
The remaining championship bouts on the ONE 172 card saw Tawanchai and Masaaki Noiri fighting for an interim featherweight kickboxing belt, Jonathan Di Bella looking to claim an interim strawweight kickboxing title opposite Sam-A Gaiyanghadao, and on the MMA side, Adriano Moraes and Yuya Wakamatsu face off for flyweight gold. And finally, Phetjeeja Lukjaoporongtom and Kana Morimoto competing for ONE Championship’s atomweight kickboxing title.
