Las Vegas – UFC welterweight Bryan Battle had a grueling 3-round fight with Randy Brown which he escaped with a split-decision victory at UFC 310 on Saturday night.
“Anytime you get a W it’s really hard to like really be too down on yourself,” Battle told reporters including Cageside Press at his post-fight scrum.
“It was not at all the fight that I envisioned. I anticipated probably a fraction of the amount of like cage grappling and just grappling in general. I didn’t envision him going for any takedowns.”
Battle (12-2) did spend a lot of time on the cage as both he and Brown fought for under hooks, both men looking for a way to get the fight to the ground. It wasn’t something Battle anticipated would take over the fight.
“I just feel so incredibly fortunate because there was a lot of things to learn from there. He was a great opponent who really is smart and clever. Normally if you learn all those things that means you’re coming off a loss. To be coming off a W I feel sensational right now,” he said.
It should be noted that Battle missed weight by four pounds for this fight. Brown was audibly not happy about the miss, but accepted the fight regardless.
“I’m sure Randy has his fair share of horror stories, but this was a tough fight camp. I popped my rib two days after I accepted the fight,” he said before pointing to cuts on his face.
“This cut right here that happened during camp. I had to nurse that. I got this cut a week out. I had to nurse that. That’s just among a whole bunch of like personal problems and all these other things. This was a hell of a camp.”
