UFC APEX – UFC welterweight Gilbert Burns is a longtime veteran of the sport, but when he faces Sean Brady at UFC Vegas 97 on Saturday night, the former title challenger is ready for anything.
“I think I’m going to get a finish…half of me wants to go to the war. The other half like why? We can get in and out,” Burns laughed with reporters on Wednesday.
“If a war presents itself, I’ll be ready for war. I’m in peace with that. I’m friends with the dark side.”
Burns (22-7) comes into this matchup with Brady on a two-fight losing skid. Having dropped two fights against Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena respectively he’s in need of a win on Saturday.
Even then he’s not so worried about a potential third loss in a row.
“(A victory) get me on the win column again, and get me ready to face a top 5. Maybe #1 contender fight so it’s important fight. With a big win, with a big statement, I’m back with the title conversation for sure. (I) still need one more fight, but yeah it’s big stakes for me,” he said.
The welterweight division has a new champion in the form of Belal Muhammad who Burns fought recently. Burns like that the new champ has let his personality out now that he has the belt.
“I like it. He’s kind of like talking a little bit now. I think the Shavkat (Rakhmonov) fight I think is going to be next. I think that’s what should be next,” he said.
“Rivalry aside, I still want to fight him, but even with all the rivalry, I’m happy for the guy.”
