St. Louis – UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis is coming into his main event bout at UFC St. Louis against Rodrigo Nascimento this Saturday feeling the best he’s felt in quite a while.
“I’m feeling great right now. Actually really feel like this is my prime,” Lewis told reporters on Wednesday.
“Whenever I was in my 20’s, early 30’s, I didn’t feel as good. Now feeling fantastic.”
Lewis (27-12) is coming off a decision loss to Jailton Almeida in Brazil last November. Returning to fight in the states is a welcome change for Lewis.
“I felt like I came in in great shape for that fight. The only thing that was bothering me I tore both my shoulders the week before the fight. After I signed, I said yeah I accept the fight, then a few days later I tore both my shoulders doing stupid Jiu Jitsu drills,” Lewis said.
“My [rotator] cups on both sides. So I couldn’t really push off or throw a punch. Even throwing an uppercut, it hurt. And the week of the fight, that Monday, I had two ear infections in my left ear and my right ear at the same time. I didn’t get over that until like three weeks after the fight.”
Now headlining the UFC’s event in St. Louis the heavyweight says he’s got something up his sleeve for this one.
“It’s going to be a complete (new) style coming into this fight. I want to do something special. I’ve been working on it on my own in my garage my coach don’t know nothing about this,” he said.
“What I’m about to throw out the first minute of this fight, my coach don’t have nothing to do with this, so if ya’ll see me throw something crazy just know it wasn’t my coaches idea. It’s my idea. That’s how good I’m feeling right now.”
And finally Lewis gave his take on the recent rap beef between the U.S’s Kendrick Lamar and Canada’s Drake.
“I’m gonna go with Kendrick,” Lewis said as to who won the rap battle.
“Kendrick from the U.S. that’s why. Yeah that’s right.”
