Miami, FL – UFC bantamweight Pedro Munhoz may have over double the amount of time in the UFC than his opponent at UFC 299 does, but he’s still game to take on Kyler Phillips on Saturday night.
“It means everything. I’m ready, hungry, I’ve been training with the best for the last few years,” Munhoz told reporters including Cageside Press on Wednesday.
“Fighting the best fighters the UFC has been offering me. Never decline any fight so my next challenge is Kyler Phillips. I’ll be ready to give it my all and take this victory Saturday night.”
Munhoz (20-8) has fought the who’s who of the bantamweight division. While he wasn’t looking at Phillips as a potential opponent he does see the fight as a chance to show his improvements since he fought Chito Vera last August.
“No not really. I was just trying to improve myself, my skills. See the last fight against Chito I thought I did a pretty good job first and second round. Third round he kind of landed more jabs and stuff like that. So (I was) able to go back and see all the mistakes, and just get better,” Munhoz said.
Even though he lost to Vera in a very close fight Munhoz was still not petty about the loss to the title challenger.
“The same thing that happened with Sean O’Malley. I won the first round and then I got hurt. I think it was 15 or 20 seconds left to the second round so that round I thought I was doing a pretty good job too,” he said.
“They’re both really good fighters. Little bit different technique. One’s more skilled the other one’s more durable. That’s going to be a tough fight, but I’m rooting for Chito.”
