Miami, FL – After asking for and receiving the matchup he asked for at UFC 299 lightweight Benoit Saint-Denis wasn’t worried about Dustin Poirier making it to their fight.
Poirier had posted on X that he did not have a fight at UFC 299, but that was quickly resolved and the former interim champion officially accepted the bout.
“At the beginning suspicions that he was injured, but was not the case. There were no doubt in my mind except negotiations from his part with the UFC,” Saint-Denis told reporters including Cageside Press on Wednesday.
“There was nothing to be afraid of. I was a happy man that it solved itself very fast.”
Saint-Denis (13-1) enters UFC 299 as the betting favorite against Poirier which is surprising to many. Poirier has fought and beaten some of the top lightweights the UFC has to offer.
“I don’t care about odds too much. 8 months ago I was a very underdog against (Ismael) Bonfim. 1 against 3 or something like that. Odds doesn’t mean anything to me. It’s just going to be a good fight,” Saint-Denis said.
“He’s ready. I did my job as well. I’m just expecting a tough fight.”
All signs point to an all-out war against Poirier, and when asked about that being a possibility Saint-Denis just smiled.
“If everybody here liked the (Michael) Chandler-Poirier fight I think you will like the Saint-Denis – Poirier fight,” he said.
