And there you have it, folks. UFC 300 has its main event, and it’s Alex Pereira vs. Jamahal Hill with the UFC’s light heavyweight championship on the line.
UFC CEO Dana White announced the news following UFC 298 on Saturday, not at the post-fight press conference or with a slick video package, but instead in a video clip posted on social media.
The announcement comes after a number of potential main events either slipped through the cracks or were never viable options. Those include Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler, Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic, Khamzat Chimaev vs. Leon Edwards, and the most recently rumored main event, Dricus Du Plessis vs. Israel Adesanya.
With the main event now official, talk with turn to whether the fight is a worthy headliner. Certainly Pereira has become a considerable star for the UFC thanks to his five match-ups, two inside the octagon, with Israel Adesanya dating back to their kickboxing days.
Pereira, a former middleweight champion, defeated ex-champ Jiri Prochazka in November having moved up to 205lbs earlier in the year. As for Hill, he vacated the title in early 2023 after injuring his Achilles tendon. UFC 300 will be his first fight back.
