For many getting their shot on Dana White’s Contender Series, the call was expected. Their years of long work finally paying off in a way that they expected. However, for St. Louis’ Cortavious Romious, it was a bit of a shock.
“My reaction was like… it felt too good to be true. This has been a long journey,” Romious explained. “I always felt like I was overlooked my entire career – that’s just my honest opinion.”
As he prepared for a fight at LFA just days before his eventual day on Contender Series, he thought there was much more work to do. In fact, even if he had won that LFA fight, he still wasn’t sure he was going to get the call.
“Honestly, I’m not exactly sure [how far I was away]. I always felt like I had to do more,” he said. “If I got that fight on LFA and got my hand raised, I would had been like ‘damn, I got to do some more work.”
But when the call came that he’d have to back out of his LFA fight in October, there was a sense of relief. Many years of hard work and being overlooked, finally got him just a step away from where he thought he’s always belonged.
“I got that information, man, I didn’t know how to feel,” Romious said. “Like wow, I’m going to fight in front of Dana White? It feels good. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity since I stepped in the cage and decided to be a fighter.”
Romious will serve as the main event of Contender Series’ week 10. He’ll fight Ramon Tavares on ESPN+. That card will begin at 8pm EST.
