Las Vegas, NV — Former UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk has not been seen since her loss to Weili Zhang in June of 2022 — but the Polish star has now revealed that she had been plotting a comeback earlier this year.
Speaking to Cageside Press at UFC X during International Fight Week, Jedrzejczyk revealed that she had been in the gym in January with that in mind.
“I was back to American Top Team in January, because I was looking for a comeback. But I had a really bad injury, since 2020, and it got bad, very bad,” explained Jedrzejczyk, the most dominant strawweight champ in UFC history. “So I had to go through the surgery. I have to do physio for the next five to nine month to get back in shape, to get back to any sport.”
Whether the 35-year-old, who has branched out into the business world since retiring, pulls the trigger on a comeback down the road remains to be seen. But, she added, she’s likely to stay involved in the sport on some level, especially working with female fighters, and men in the lighter weight classes.
“I don’t want to be a coach, but I see myself helping and training with them,” said Jedrzejczyk. “Because I will train forever and ever. I love this sport so much.”
With the latest class of UFC Hall of Fame inductees entering the hall last week, it feels like Jedrzejczyk’s turn could be next.
“What’s meant to be will be, will come. We’ll see, we’ll see,” Jedrzejczyk stated, noting that she has no plan to ask Dana White about the possibility.
Jedrzejczyk, who was on hand for an emotional Hall of Fame induction ceremony during International Fight Week, added “it’s very nice to see the sport still growing and evolving, but everything around it is just, wow. Big congrats to the UFC for organizing this. It’s big, it’s big. One day, maybe.”
