Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred Boxing 4 arrived on Saturday, April 1, 2023 offering one of the most off-the-wall boxing spectacles to date.
Comprised mainly of mixed martial artists (plus Roy Jones Jr.), Gamebred Boxing 4 was a guilty pleasure sort of card featuring some bonadide former UFC stars. Vitor Belfort was paired up with Jacare Souza, a dangerous submissions expert taking on a feared striker who had previously bludgeoned an aging Evander Holyfield.
Another former UFC champion, Jose Aldo, was matched up with a familiar foe in Jeremy Stephens. Aldo, who won an exhibition boxing match earlier this year, had finished Stephens at UFC Calgary in 2018.
The main event, meanwhile, had boxing legend and Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr. coming out of retirement for one more fight, against UFC and WEC champ Anthony “Showtime” Pettis. Competing for the first time since a draw in an exhibition match with Mike Tyson in 2020, Jones was looking at one more win against Pettis, making his debut as a boxer in the match-up.
