The UFC returned to Australia this week, touching down in Perth for its first fight week, and event, since prior to the onset of COVID-19.
UFC 284 was a big deal with that in mind, and an even bigger deal given its main event was a bonafide super-fight. Champ vs. Champ, #1 vs. #2 on the promotion’s pound-for-pound list. Yet somehow, Islam Makhachev vs. Alexander Volkanovski had become an afterthought in the wake of Jon Jones pending return at UFC 285 next month, and the ongoing debacle that is Dana White’s Power Slap.
Regardless of the soft promotional push (something Makhachev himself touched on, only to be rebuked by UFC President Dana White), UFC 284 had some promising match-ups. With featherweight champion Volkanovski making the move to lightweight in search of a second title, Josh Emmett and Yair Rodriguez were booked into an interim title fight at 145lbs. While seemingly a bit premature, the booking at least ensured that should Volkanovski be successful and opt to remain at 155lbs, the featherweight division would keep rolling right along.
2022 standout newcomer Jack Della Maddalena, meanwhile, was back in action against Randy Brown. Three fights and three finishes into his UFC career, Maddalena had become must-see TV.
