Brunno Ferreira was given the nod to step in on short notice against Gregory Rodrigues at UFC 283 on Saturday.
Middleweight Rodrigues, a.k.a. “Robocop,” has become a fan favorite known for violent, bloody, entertaining stand-up wars. Something Ferreira would need to weather despite the short-notice nature of the bout.
A war it was, but Ferreira more than held his own, connecting at the right moment to get his hand raised.
The fight started and a lot of power was shown from both guys. Ferreira got the attention of Rodrigues early with a looping left hand. Rodrigues got the respect back by countering Ferreria on his way in.
A failed takedown came from Ferreira and the confidence grew for Rodrigues. Ferreira knocked Rodrigues down with a leg kick but Rodrigues landed on top, albeit just briefly. Already slowed down, Ferreira was having trouble finding his range. As Rodrigues was coming forward Ferreira landed a massive left hook. Rodrigues was out before he even hit the mat.
“I took this fight on eight day’s notice, it was last Wednesday, so this means a lot for my team, my family, everyone,” Ferreira said following the fight, calling the experience “awesome.”
Official Result: Brunno Ferreira def. Gregory Rodrigues by knockout (left hand), Round 1, 4:13
