Miranda Maverick earned her second win of 2022 and did not leave any doubts, controlling Shanna Young for 15 minutes at UFC Vegas 64.
Shanna Young just barely made weight for her UFC Vegas 64 fight with Miranda Maverick. The pair entered a rematch from their Invicta days as part of UFC Vegas 65 event. One day prior, Young had needed three attempts and a haircut to make the flyweight limit — but make weight she did.
The featured prelim opened up with some forward pressure from Maverick clipping Young straightaway with a left hook. The 24-year-old was the one doing most of the work and began chopping the leg of Young. Young began landing a few nice countershots as Maverick was coming into her distance, but they were unable to phase Maverick. Maverick attempted a few high kicks but as she missed her attempts, she was getting popped with one-two combos. Despite the betting line being completely one-sided, round 1 was extremely close and competitive up until Maverick scored herself a takedown. From there, she did extremely well to transition into full mount and unleashed some ground-and-pound in the dying embers of the round.
The expectation coming into the second round was that Maverick was going to immediately come out with a level change due to her success there in round one. It took just under a minute and a half for her to do exactly that. Shortly after securing another takedown, Maverick began trying to transition into full mount straightaway, staying active in the meantime. In a brief scramble, Maverick found herself with one hook in whilst trying to secure Young’s back completely. The 24-year-old got too high up on the back trying to force the position, and lost it completely, with Young getting the fight back to the feet. The fight didn’t stay standing for long and Maverick tripped Young and transitioned straight into full mount, letting some heavy ground-and-pound go. Again though, it came too late in the round.
Early in round three, Maverick landed a nice sidekick to the face of Young, followed by a left cross, straight down the pipe. Again, Maverick exposed the wrestling side of Young’s game, getting the fight to the mat once again. This time though, she got her down almost directly in the center of the Octagon, giving her more space to transition. Some more ground domination for Maverick saw a wild scramble, with Maverick finishing in full mount. Young did well to see the fight out, with Maverick scoring yet another dominant win.
