UFC 280 unfolds this weekend in Abu Dhabi, with two extremely compelling title fights topping the PPV card.
Charles Oliveira will enter this Saturday’s main event an uncrowned king, victim of a allegedly tampered with scale when weighing in for his last fight, against Justin Gaethje. While that backstage scale was reportedly inadvertently adjusted, leading to Oliveira missing weight by a half pound for what would have been a title defense, the end result was Oliveira being stripped of his belt — and pretty much everyone seeing him as champ regardless.
Against Islam Makhachev, “Do Bronx” gets one of his toughest challenges yet — and the world gets to see what Oliveira vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov might have looked like.
In the co-main event of UFC 280, meanwhile, Aljamain Sterling puts his bantamweight title on the line against ex-two time champ T.J. Dillashaw. After being stripped of his belt in 2018 following a positive drug test for EPO, Dillashaw spent two years on the sidelines — but returned in 2021 to defeat Cory Sandhagen.
Having not fought since, Dillashaw is set to return from another year-plus layoff at UFC 280, looking to become a three-time champion — hopefully without any further controversy.
UFC 280 takes place at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE this Saturday, October 22, 2022. The preliminary card kicks off bright and early for western fight fans at 10AM ET, with the main card getting underway at 2PM. Full results from Friday’s weigh-in can be found below.
Just prior to weigh-ins, UFC broadcaster and weigh-in host Jon Anik announced that the featherweight fight between Zubaira Tukhugov and Lucas Almeida had been cancelled. Weight management issues with Tukhugov were cited as the reason behind the move.
Third last to weigh in, Katlyn Chookagian stripped down behind a barrier, but still missed the flyweight non-title limit by 1.5lbs. She did not make a second attempt.
