The back-and-forth between UFC welterweight Nate Diaz and the promotion seems to finally be coming to an end as he has verbally agreed to fight Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279 on Sept. 10th at T-Mobile Arena.
The welterweight match-up will serve as the main event of the PPV.
News of the fight was first reported by ESPN.
Diaz (20-13) has been speaking out on many platforms about the UFC’s lack of fight offers and expressing a desire to be cut loose from the promotion. UFC president Dana White has been firing back after Diaz claimed he was being held “hostage” by the UFC. This is the last fight on Diaz’s contract.
Now he gets one of the promotion’s bigger up-and-comers in Chimaev.
Chimaev (11-0) retained his undefeated record after taking a decision victory over Gilbert Burns at UFC 273.
It’s worth noting that last time Diaz got in the octagon with a seemingly unbeatable opponent he defeated Conor McGregor at UFC 196 on short notice. However Chimaev himself is a completely different challenge.
Other bouts on the UFC 279 card include:
- Irene Aldana vs. Macy Chiasson
- Shamil Abdurakhimov vs. Jailton Almeida
- Norma Dumont vs. Danyelle Wolf
- Heili Alateng Chad Anheliger
- Nikolas Motta vs. Cameron VanCamp
- Louis Cosce vs. Trevin Giles
