Las Vegas, NV – Top 10 UFC heavyweights were in action in the main event of UFC Vegas 56 on Saturday where #7 Alexander Volkov and #8 Jairzinho Rozenstruik battled to stay in the hunt for a UFC title.
Volkov (34-10) came into the UFC APEX having dropped two of his last three. He headlined UFC London in March against Tom Aspinall where he lost via submission. The long time UFC heavyweight has come close to a title shot before, but seemed to losses against Derrick Lewis, Cyril Gane, Curtis Blaydes and Aspinall have stalled his progress towards gold. He looked to get back on track at UFC Vegas 56.
Rozenstruik (12-3) came into the UFC and took off running with an impressive array of knockout wins which included Alistair Overeem and Andrei Arlovski. He lost a title eliminator to current champion Francis Ngannou in May 2020 and has since had mixed results going 2-2 since the loss.
In Round one, Volkov came out with a kick-heavy attack switching from legs to the body then the head. Rozenstruik seemed to have a hard time getting close enough to land. Finally he got close by catching a kick and landing on Volkov which invited the Russian to land on him as well. A clean right hand put Rozenstruik on skates and Herb Dean waved the fight off saving Bigi Boy from more damage. Volkov gets back on the horse with a TKO win over Rozenstruik.
