The UFC’s lightweight championship has been one of the hottest titles in professional fighting for years. A deep weight class, with a colorful rogue’s gallery, lightweight is must-see TV, and UFC 274 underscored that fact.
Three lightweight fights decorated the main card alone: Cowboy Cerrone vs. Joe Lauzon, something of a loser leaves town match. Michael Chandler vs. Tony Ferguson, a fan-friendly match-up that promised violence. And Justin Gaethje vs. champ Charles Oliveira, the long-awaited second chance at gold for “The Highlight.”
Oliveira made things dramatic on Friday, coming in a half pound heavy during his first trip to the scales. With the possibility of being stripped of his title, Oliveira weighed in again an hour later — and was once again 155.5 pounds. As a result, the UFC title was vacated— only Gaethje would be eligible to win the belt on Saturday.
Other weigh-in highlights: Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone brought son Dacson Danger with him to the scale.
