Charles Jourdain was eating a cookie when he got the call for the biggest fight of his young career, and became an instant fan favorite for stepping up when very few did.
“I was sitting on the couch eating a cookie. And I’m not even a cookie guy. I was eating them because my girlfriend ate too much of them. So I was eating them for her. So, I was eating cookies, and I saw that [Movsar] Evloev was out [of UFC 270] on Twitter. I was talking with my manager on the phone, and he was like, ‘are you in shape?’ Of course, I’m in shape. And he said, ‘do you want it?’ Of course, I want it,” Jourdain told reporters during UFC Vegas 52 media day. “I always had a feeling that me and Ilia Topuria would be a fight that the featherweight division would be envisioning because of his raw ability to knock out people and my ability to take damage and keep going. You know, make those fun fights. So when it happened, I just thought it was fate.”
Unfortunately, the fight never took place as Topuria would withdraw from the fight due to a botched weight cut. Jourdain still hopes to meet him down the road.
Topuria was ranked No. 15 in the featherweight division at the time of UFC 270. Jourdain was asked if he was disappointed by not getting the chance to fight for the ranking. The Canadian wasn’t bothered by it, in fact, he doesn’t care about the rankings. Instead, he wants fun fights for the fans.
“People around me talk to me about being Top 15 or Top 10 in the next two years, but I don’t think about it too much. I think about performance. I think about bleeding with the most dangerous men in the world. And sometimes you see those featherweights who are there more to win than to fight, and I’m not very appealed by that. I’m not attracted to it that much. I really like, let’s say, it’s Edson Barbosa fighting or Max Holloway or Lando Vannata as well. So these guys have 15 minutes to try to murk you, and this is what I like about it. So, the top 15 will come when it comes, and for now, I need to make a statement against [Lando] Vannata,” Jourdain said.
Jourdain gets his wish and fights Lando Vannatta at UFC Vegas 52 in what should be an easy Fight of the Night.
