The first Pay-Per-View event to lack a title fight since last year’s Poirier vs. McGregor 3 arrived on Saturday, March 5, 2022 — with a grudge match between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal atop the UFC 272 card.
The beef between the former teammates turned bitter enemies had been well-documented over the years, and if that wasn’t enough, the promotion made sure to remind you every chance they got — from UFC Embedded to a frankly unwatchable face-off interview between the pair, hosted by ESPN mouthpiece Stephan A. Smith.
If grudge matches weren’t your thing, the card was a mixed bag of sorts. Another grudge match between Maryna Moroz and Mariya Agapova was one of the most interesting bouts on the televised prelims, while Jalin Turner vs. Jamie Mullarkey felt as if it had Fight of the Night potential.
The main card, meanwhile, had a struggling Greg Hardy lined up with Sergey Spivak, and a co-main event that had to be salvaged last minute when Rafael Fiziev dropped out of his fight with Rafael dos Anjos due to contracting COVID-19. With Fiziev gone, it was Renato Moicano stepping in on less than a week’s notice.
Perhaps the most intriguing bout on the PPV portion of the card was the featherweight match-up between Brazilian veteran Edson Barboza and undefeated Arkansas native Bryce Mitchell — fighting for the first time since October of 2020. A classic striker versus grappler match-up, Mitchell had a chance to prove that he belonged at the top of the 145lb division.
