UFC 272 will feature two title fights atop its Pay-Per-View card.
First reported by EPSN, a trilogy fight between featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway is set to headline the event. That bout joins Aljamain Sterling vs. Petr Yan 2, initially reported by MMA Junkie, which gets co-feature duty.
UFC 272 is set to take place on March 5, 2022 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Max “Blessed” Holloway (23-6) and Alexander Volkanovski (23-1) first met in December 2019, with then-champ “Blessed” falling to the Australian and losing his featherweight title in the process. The decision and Holloway’s standing in the division were enough to warrant an immediate rematch, which Volkanovski won — via an even thinner margin in a split decision.
A trilogy bout has long since been mulled, despite Volkanovski being 2-0 against the Hawaiian. Since their second meeting, the champ successfully defended his title against Brian Ortega, following a coaching stint on The Ultimate Fighter 29.
Holloway, meanwhile, has won both of his fights since he and Volkanovski last shared the octagon. in January 2021, Holloway put on a master class against Calvin Kattar, setting records for most strikes attempted, and landed, in UFC history, alongside several other records. Holloway followed that performance up with a unanimous decision win over Yair Rodriguez in November.
Both victories earned Holloway Fight of the Night honors.
