Las Vegas, NV – UFC welterweight Bryan Barberena landed in Las Vegas this week not knowing who he would be fighting after Matt Brown withdrew due to a positive COVID test.
Lucky for Barberena there was a last second opponent available in UFC newcomer Darian Weeks. Still it wasn’t too different for Barberena from normal fight weeks.
“You know, seemed like another fight week to me. I’m just one of those people that don’t really get shook very easy. When I came into fight week I knew I didn’t have a matchup. I knew deep in my heart that they were going to find me somebody. They did, didn’t matter who, could have been a dang champion. I don’t care. But I was just ready to fight I was ready to go out there and put on a show. Honestly I wanted to put on more of a performance than fight of the night kind of style. But I got away from myself I guess,” Barberena said.
Weeks is coming off a stint in LFA and jumped at the chance to fight in the octagon. Barberena didn’t know much about the young welterweight.
“My teammate watched a little bit (of tape) I glance when I had gotten his name stuff like that. I knew a couple things, he likes to throw hooks and some teep kicks. And that’s pretty much all I knew going in.”
Now that he’s secure the win Barberena’s plans include rebooking the fight against Matt Brown.
“You know I would like to get the Matt Brown matchup back. That was kind of a dream matchup or whatever. He’s a legend. I believe I’m a legend in my own sense. And we just like to be in there and share the ring with him or the octagon.”
Barberena will fight anyone if it makes sense.
“If someone falls out this week and it makes sense. I’d step in. This week, next week, whatever get another in before Christmas.”
