Triller FC’s experimental Triad Combat debuted on Saturday night in Arlington, TX.
The hybrid boxing-MMA “team” combat sport was set to answer (probably not once and for all) which was superior, boxing or MMA, by having fighters compete in a triangle shaped ring over two-minute rounds, with clinching allowed — but not wrestling, jiu-jitsu, knees, elbows, foot stomps or kicks.
So boxing with clinches, and spinning back fists and superman punches, basically. A more complete breakdown of the rules can be found in this video breakdown:
Saturday’s first-ever Triad Combat event was headlined by former UFC champion and Bellator MMA athlete Frank Mir, taking on Kubrat Pulev — who was coming off a title fight loss to Anthony Joshua.
Also on the Triad Combat card, some familiar names in UFC/Bellator heavyweight Matt Mitrione, former UFC bad boy Mike Perry, and Bellator mainstay Derek Campos.
Quinton “Rampage” Jackson served as coach of Team MMA, while Team Boxing was headed up by Shannon Briggs.
