Featherweight prospect Aaron Pico put it all together in the cage at Bellator 271, becoming the first man to defeat Justin Gonzales.
Gonzales had started the night a perfect 12-0, but Pico’s body shots and takedowns made it a long night for the Contender Series alum. Pico took home a one-sided unanimous decision victory in the end.
“I honestly felt in the zone tonight. I just didn’t think about anything other than being consistent,” Pico told media members following Friday’s fight in Hollywood, FL. “And if the knockout would come, it would be great, but if not, I’m happy that we won. I was consistent, I played my song tonight, and I’m happy.”
Agreeing that he had a few more gears to his game to come, Pico later added that “I’m low key just kind of itching to get back in the gym. I really want to get good at this game.”
The early going in the fight came at an absolutely wild pace, and there was a sort of nervous energy in the air. It felt like either man could end the fight at any moment. Pico, however, took little notice — he was too zoned in.
“Yeah, you know I didn’t really think that much out there tonight. Like I said I felt like was in the zone, I just stuck to what my body’s used to, all the muscle memory, all the reps,” Pico stated. “Just being consistent. Setting my pace. It was a good night, we got the win.”
“I’m really, really hard on myself. I want to finish, and if I don’t get the finish sometimes I don’t feel the best, but honestly I’m happy I got the victory, and I didn’t really think all that much out there tonight.”
