ONE Championship’s Dangal aired Saturday, with a long-awaited heavyweight title fight topping the card.
Since his exit from the UFC, Arjan Bhullar has been the top contender for the ONE heavyweight title. Held by Brandon Vera since 2015, the belt had been defended just twice, with Vera keeping a sparse schedule at best. His last fight had actually come at light heavyweight, with “The Truth” trying and failing to win a second title.
Bhullar, a gold medal winner for Canada at the commonwealth games, had won his last three bouts ahead of Dangal, a card built around talented Indian fighters. That included two under the UFC banner, and his debut in ONE Championship in 2019 against Mauro Cerilli.
Saturday (well, airing Saturday, as the event was filmed in advance) was Bhullar’s chance to shine.
Also on the card, another Indian wrestling standout, Ritu Phogat. Despite taking part in the atomweight grand prix later this month, Phogat was taking on Bi Nguyen on Saturday, and looking to maintain her perfect record.
