For Davey Grant, it’s consistency that has been his toughest opponent over the years. The British bantamweight, who made history by winning the first-ever bout on “Fight Island” last summer, had fought just six times since his UFC debut heading into UFC Vegas 21 on Saturday.
Returning in roughly eight month’s time, it was, by Grant’s standards, a short turnaround. Opposite him, Jonathan Martinez, looking for his third straight win in his return to the 135lb weight class.
Grant was looking for the knockout all fight, and he got it.
Both men exchanged leg kicks to start round one. Grant was chewing up Martinez’s calf. Two minutes into the first round, both fighters exchanged nasty hooks. Grant threw very creative kicks all throughout the first round — front kicks, spinning kicks, and sidekicks. With thirty seconds left in the round, Martinez landed a perfect punch that sent Grant to the ground. Martinez followed to the ground to end the round.
Grant was throwing heavy hooks to start round two, and a few of them stung Martinez. Grant was still looking to knock out Martinez with every shot. Two minutes into the round and Martinez only threw two jabs as Grant continued to pressure him. Grant then landed a huge left hook that flattened Martinez! Grant followed him to the ground to end the fight.
WOKE UP FEELING DAN-GER-OUS 😳
