Every fighter has their go-to moves, especially specialists within certain martial arts disciplines. Their own signature styles can lead to spectacular finishes. Whether it’s a scary-good rear-naked choke that fighters just can’t seem to avoid once going to the ground or crazy power in a straight left hand that has dropped even granite-chinned fighters with ease, each fighter has a particular finishing move or sequence. Moves that have stuck in fan’s minds and come to define and describe their careers within the cage.
For UFC 259 we will take a look at some fighters with only a few (5 or less) fights in the UFC, rather than those fighters that are long-time UFC veterans with a bunch of finishes with the promotion.
Kyler “Matrix” Phillips (8-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC)
Total Number of Pro MMA Finishes: 6
Via KO/TKO: 5
Via Submission: 1
Total Number of UFC Finishes: 1
Via KO/TKO: 1
(Cameron Else)
Via Submission: 0
Kyler Phillips is a free-flowing striker that throws both kicks, punches, flying and spinning techniques with reckless abandon. Kyler has decent power but the majority of his finishes definitely come from an accumulation of strikes especially his long combinations, featuring strikes that opponents often don’t see coming.
A Contender Series veteran of the 2017 series that also spent time on TUF Season 27, Kyler has been on the radar of hardcore fans for a while now. And has been fine-tuning his striking with some of the best in the game ever since his shot on the Contender Series (an appearance which also produced a finish). Kyler’s last fight against Cameron Else was his first finish in the UFC, and after standing to strike most of the first round, he showed off his takedowns and control on the ground in order to get a ground n pound finish in the second. A dominant win for ‘Matrix’ as he now finds himself on one of the biggest cards of the year at UFC 259.
